I was going to get a shiny new Nintendo 3DS last week from my local Gametraders store when I spotted a second hand Game Boy Advance SP. I bought that instead and I'm glad.
The reason is, there were no games I wanted. All of the launch titles were boring (Rayman 3D, Rabbids 3D) and the newer ones I'd already got for Nintendo 64 (Star Fox, Zelda). The only title I may have liked was Super Street Fighter IV but I played it on a friends console and decided I'd stick with Super Street Fighter II on SNES and even better, there's a GBA port! I normally rush to buy new Nintendo software but the 3DS has not interested me. Let's fix that with the Wii U then.

But why buy a 3D one for way more than a normal one, if you don't even use the 3D?...

I'd rather just get the DSi, because my eyes will strain and cause me to have bad vision as I already wear glasses.

The 3DS has a lot of new features, other than 3D

Yeah I know there's a bunch of awesome games coming out and I was especially excited about Mario Kart 7 until I actually played it. It has the Mario Kart Wii style physics and handling which I dislike and I'm a retro fan at heart so I think I'll be fine playing Mario Kart Super Circuit. As for the others the only other one I might be interested in is Animal Crossing and Mario 3D Land was too easy for me. I finished it in about a day and a half.

3D Retro for me is a bit 2D, I'd rather have real graphics rather than retro but I'm perfectly fine with both.
As for the 3DS, I love it, and I always play Mario Kart 7 on multiplayer (not local but world-wide)

Ok, I can get you not wanting to buy a 3DS, because the battery life sucks, and the games are on the expensive side. But.... getting a GBA SP instead? GBA SPs are awesome, I understand that (I have 2 (a "Mark 1" and a "Mark 2") and at least 10 games for them), but they are about 10 years old now. They have bad graphics, and the little screen on them is more likely to hurt your eyes than a 3DS. Not to mention there hasn't been a single new game for them in 5 years.
(Oh, and just wondering, is the model number AGS-001 ("Mark 1" frontlit) or AGS-101 ("Mark 2" backlit)?)

I've got a Mark 1 and I don't really care about graphics. I'm used to playing games that are 10 years older than me (I prefer the SNES to the Wii)

You should have gotten a DS lite. It's got a Gameboy slot, and it can play (obviously) DS games.

I like (and play) alot of old games, like the original Super Mario Bros., Starcraft, and many other pre-Y2K games. But really, you should have gotten a DS Lite, like maxskywalker said. It can play GBA games, but is somewhat more modern, and can play DS games (duh). You can get them easily for like $75 now, $30-45 if you know where to look.

Rabbit, you might think that's a bit unfair, but that's how businesses often get people to buy their new products. Nintendo's not the only company that does this -- Microsoft, Sony, and many others. Can you play PS3 games on the PS2? Not really. (However, they do often give backward compatability -- the Nintendo 3DS can still play Nintendo DS games).
Not to mention, the 3DS has many different technical features such as a larger screen, a circle pad, and most likely different processing capabilities.
