What I think: The only reason, why the mayas said there would be 'the end of the world' on 21st december 2012, was, that on this date, the sun and other stars are in a special constellation to the middle of the milky way^^

They didn't say it was the 'end of the world'. People think that because it's the end of their calendar, but actually, the Mayans celebrated the end of their calendar.
