So, I'm making a film with some friends, and in the script (unfinished, so this might not even be in the final film) a car explodes with several people just outside it. The explosion comes from the boot of the car, by the way, as that is where they put the drugs with the hidden bomb. I was thinking about how to film this, and here's my idea:
Get/make a model car (one of the friends is incredibly good at making models, so realism of the car probably won't be a problem), take out the explosives from several party poppers, fill the back of the car with the explosives, (and I'll probably add a bit of oil to add some fire to the explosion) and then light it. This would almost definitely have to be in slow motion to make it more realistic, as it is just a model.
So that's my idea. Any suggestions?

Oh, and I'd film the people getting blasted back in front of a green screen, and then add the two shots together.

Maybe Sony Vegas would do the trick

Use a C3 Rocket engine

I presume they are both some kind of software?

This probably sound's cliché, but...
...watch freddiew's tutorials. They only really work for After Affects, though.

Make sure the car has metal and most other parts to make it seem more realistic.
Are you good with electronics? If so, use a piezo generator from a lighter To ignite the gunpowder.
I recommend you to open those snap-it's though

I'll have a look at that, thanks.

I'm not, but the friend who makes models is, as is the other friend. And also, I don't understand that last sentence.

I'd pen the things that you throw on the ground instead of poppers, as the snap-it's have rocks that ignite the gunpowder and the party poppers have a more complex mechanism.
Don't forget you won't get it right the first time, so you'll have to test it on something.

That's pretty awesome.

My friend has done it, and it seems pretty simple. There's just a kind of packet inside the party popper which is attacked to a string (the one that you pull), which is what he held it by. Then he lit it, and after a few seconds, it exploded. It doesn't seem too complicated to me.

What does? The idea for the film or my idea of how to film it?

It might actually look good, though.

I was planning to try it today, with just a very simple cardboard model of a car, but it's kind of slipped my mind, and by the time I get round to it now it will be too dark to film it outside. So I'll try it tomorrow, hopefully. I might make the model car this evening though, just to make sure I'll have time to do the rest tomorrow. And by the way, I just had a look, and found that I have at least five party poppers, so I'll see how that goes.
I'll film it, and post it here if I can.

Unfortunately it's raining today, so I probably won't be able to do it. And tomorrow I'm going to said friends' house.

I've just finished taking the explosives out of the five party poppers. I've put them into a small Mini Egg container. I'll probably spray just a tad of hairspray inside soon before blowing it up, to add some fire to the explosion. Actually, if it's a nice day tomorrow, I'll probably have time in the morning to film it.
