Because of some recent abuses of the embedded image feature (the [img] tag), we have disabled it on our forums. We regret the inconvenience but feel that it's the best thing to do given the circumstances. If an image is necessary for a forum discussion, we suggest that you upload it in a Scratch project and link to the project from your forum post.

This is permenant?
Wow. It is kinda just friendly fire disabling all images, although it will also prevent spam like "cool story bro"

Wait a minute... why are images still showing up in signatures? Didn't you turn that off?
And is this forum-wide, or does this only apply for a specific forum?

It's all forums. Images in signatures are a concern but because of the small display area available to signatures, the potential impact is limited. We'll reevaluate if necessary.

Well, this sucks. Also, is there a way where you can make it so certain posts have images (block library for example)

what actually happened? since i live in the UK i wasn't on when it happened.
urr... same here. Some people who are trust worthy told me on hamachi that someone spammed the forums with... erm... "images that aren't suitable for scratch". I'm glad they were banned though. So now, a bit over-reactive, the ST have banned the [img] tags.

Security always has a price. I don't like having to use keys to get into my house and car all the time - but I lock them anyway because I think it makes them more secure. It's unfortunate that everyone has to suffer because of the actions of a few individuals.

@ Bye-bye Block Library
It's too bad about the block library. Maybe it should be moved over to the wiki?

@ Everything is less attractive
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I've heard. On the plus side, the pages will load faster and there won't be any more image spamming.
Servine wrote:
Couldn't we just upload the post, but until a mod looks at it, the tags are disabled.
We are happy to consider suggestions as long as they meet our security concerns and don't create a large drain on our moderation or development resources. There's no feature in the current forum software for doing what you suggest.

I believe JSO has an alternative implementation in the works for that. I'm not sure how much work remains to be done on it, but we're looking into it.

I'll suggest moving the block library to the wiki, to the block library team.

Yeah. We didn't really have too much of that spam anyways.
I HATE it when one bad apple spoils it for the rest of us. I don't know this just seems... drastic

I think that the voting idea was better. Like, if a post is flagged 10 times, it automatically becomes disabled.

I really like this idea. It's very similar to what we have for the main site and I think it could really work

Oh come on.
Are they allowed on TBGs?

Ah, that's a shame I'll put a notice in the block library, thanks for letting us know.
I'm still trying to get my remote SQL database working for the blocks.scratchr.org site so we can move there when I get it working.
I'm assuming this'll be a temporary measure?

Honestly, this seems a little sheltering/fascist in my opinion.
Let's hope they give the option back in the future. Some posts just aren't right without images. In the meantime, everyone just use the BBCode tag anyway to signal people to copy the url into their browser. We can still use them that way.
But this seems a bit (actually, much more than a bit) drastic of an approach. I honestly wonder if it's the best course of action...

Is this permanent?
Please do not take the following as accusative, just my personal opinion.
I believe this is a very drastic option that the community didn't deserve to be implemented. Lucario has really made an effort with his Misc. topic to find different solutions, and I think some ideas exposed there are valuable and possible.
At least, before making this decision on the honest community, let's try removing image embedding from users younger than a year (as a first idea). We could increase moderation resources, or divert 30 minutes of development time to implement the voting system that so many Scratchers support (I've worked with fluxBB code before on Mod Share, it's simple).
I really hope you think this through before acting so excessively preventive.

I think this was the right decision even if it is a little inconvenient. Perhaps we should think about it on the bright side, no more image spammers.
