Nah, how about a cliché one where this person has a dream and in the dream you get to control the person in a 3d world with minigames, and he has to escape from giant bears and witches and rats and castles of candy and fairy-tale stuff like that. And in the end, if you win, he wakes up. But if you don't, then he dies in his sleep.

(but in the end either the machine doesnt work at all and is garbage, the old guy lied and the past sucks, or he cheated everyone out of their work, takes the time machine that you worked really hard on and goes to the past by himself and you never see the machine again, or you could be a wimp and give it a happy ending)
