Are old topics ever removed?

I just noticed... This forum alone has over 8190 closed and never used topics. Wouldn't it make the server faster, because it doesn't have to hold as much data if these topics didn't exist?

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

True it would, but I don't know why the mods and admins of scratch don't delete them, i think it's somthing to do with history and new threads being made with the answer in a deleted thread, or somthing. (i mean thread as in a topic, i don't know why - i just name it that  tongue  )

I'm back.

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

I'd guess that it acts as a reference. In other words, if you search for something, there will probably already be an answered topic.

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

That would make sense if it is spam or a duplicate. I have also noticed that some topics that have been closed by the scratch team because they do not belong in the forum topic are not deleted, and moved topics are still in their original place. It would make more sense to remove these.

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

Sometimes, topics that have significance to Scratch`s history are sometimes archived so that people can look at them again.

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

True about the worth of the topics. But over 200 pages of topics? I think not.

Sometimes old topic can hold useful information, you have no idea how many times I used to forums to search up for Troubleshooting problems or how to code velocity n Scratch when I first started.

Sometimes, when a thread is closed, it is kept visible so people can see the close message and better understand why the topic was closed in the first place. Redirects (links to where a thread was moved) are usually there in case someone was trying to look for the original topic.

To add on to what you said... They can also help scratchers who don't understand why some topics get closed. All the scratcher has to do is look at the last message left by the mod or admin and learn why the topic was closed  big_smile

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

Although, there are 200+ pages of topics, and that adds up to about 8100 topics. In all about scratch alone! I'm just wondering, does the ST ever clean them up? Because over 8000 topics seems a little over the top.

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

well, fluxBB(the software that the scratch forums use) stores all of the topic in a SQL database. so as long as the unique index is the post/topic id it probably wouldn't make much of a difference...

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

I like to look at the old threads for reference, especially in Troubleshooting, because if I have a similar problem, I can see what to do to fix the problem.

Re: Are old topics ever removed?

Like TR said, posts are stored in a database, which really doesn't take up too much space at all.
