i have just installed xubuntu but i don't seem to have any sound. it shows the icon for sound but it doesn't play.

Are your speakers external? If so, make sure that's on as well wink

Try opening up 'alsamixer' through the terminal and checking your output sound mix. I've had the same problem before, and that turned out to be it.
