Some members may like a status system, but other members may see this somewhat like an invasion of privacy. To be honest, I see it as the latter of the two, and I would prefer to keep my status invisible when I am online, rather than have someone know that I've been moving from chatting in the forums, to commenting on a projects, to staying idle; I'm just bothered by it.
If such a status message is implemented, it must be implemented to cater to everyone, that is, users can choose to be invisible or not.

Why not make it so you choose? Like a dropdown menu. (Menu: 1. Invisible 2. Not Invisible)

That kinda sound like social interaction, I this keeps p, some people may ask for chatrooms, but I like your idea.
