Because people don't want to install something new just to play on a server, they'd rather just connect to it via MC.

Look, if you just came on this thread to nag me about Hamachi, then mission acomplished. I'm doing this my way, because I'm not allowed to port-forward. Make your own server, because I'm getting really hacked off with people bugging me about Hamachi. I have 6 days until I make this server public, and the last thing I need is a host change.

To run the server software you need to run it on your computer. It also (I think) requires internet access.
