Why do grocery stores have so many checkout lines when they only keep a few open?

All of the other ones were hillarious except this one. The reason why they have those extra ones are for when they are really busy. I think that's common sense right? Usually around the holidays are when they are all full.

Why would they need to pay 10 workers for each line when 5 is enough because the other 5 would've had nothing to do?
