Do you think scratch could become a real programming language?

I'm wondering if this could be the next step for the scratch team, to actually make a programming language based on scratch. I'm not sure if this is even possible, but it would be amazing if they could pull this off. Programming languages tend to be much more confusing then they have to be. While scratch is pretty straight forward and you don't have to learn tons of terms with overly confusing names.

Re: Do you think scratch could become a real programming language?

Umm.... they'd have to add a "actual programming language" tab on each sprite, and then it'd be real.

Scratch was made to be a simple for everyone programming language.
So that anyone can program.
It would make it harder if it was text and not drag and drop.

Re: Do you think scratch could become a real programming language?

I made a suggestion to them to make add a text-based feature (except I used the reason of helping people learn how programming languages work, like dot syntax and the generic curly braces, and such things).  The ST said that Scratch was meant to help learn to program, but apparently they consider a text-based version too 'advanced' for Scratch.

I'm not talking about an add on to scratch, it would be a whole new project, with the same idea of being simple to learn. And by real I mean something that could be used to make websites, or maybe programs/games, like html, css, javascript, java, ect.

Then it wouldn't be Scratch. -.-

Ok, so what? It would be like scratch in the sense that the coding would be similar to the blocks.

For what reason? Isn't it easier using blocks?  hmm

At least 60 seconds have to pass between asking questions. Please wait a little while and try asking again.

Because with scratch you can only run things in a java player. If it were a programming language you could do what ever you want with it. (Websites, programs, ect)

You can put Scratch projects on your websites.

Re: Do you think scratch could become a real programming language?

Scratch is based off of Squeak, which is based off of Java.

Java is a real programming language.

Therefore, Scratch is a real programming language.

Simple logic.

Re: Do you think scratch could become a real programming language?

Since Scratch was meant to be an introductory programming language, I don't think it'll go on to be anything "legitimate," as it were: the pros are already well stuck in their ways of C or Java and frankly, for large-scale programming, the interface can be a major pain.

That being said, for GUI-based programming, Scratch is already a really great programming language. And, as many commenters have already noted, any programming language is a "real" programming language, although Scratch's uses are extremely limited.

It'd be nice to have a text tab, that'd help me when I'd rather type it all out than slowly drag and drop.
