you know what

it's time to start a rant about this.
it's been pestering me for several months now.

It has come to my attention that many people on the Internet have resorted to reducing the word "for" to 4; reducing the word "you" to "u", the sound "ate" to "8"; and so on.  There was a time when I used to do this, but now, it seems completely illegible and unintelligent.  How much longer does it take to spell out two more letters in a word?  Unless you're an incredibly slow typer, I think that there really is no need for doing this.

If you think that this is cool, kudos.  There are many other people who share my opinion, and others who completely disagree.  This action makes me believe that you are not yet mature enough to recognize the need for self-presentation in front of others.

Don't say "oh, you have really bad grammar too".  Read my posts carefully.  Although I don't use proper punctuation sometimes, look at my word and sentence structure - if I'm not mistaken, I usually don't make huge mistakes in my sentences.  For some people, it has become a habit of using one-letter words in posts, but I assure you that I only misspell words on purpose, or when I am in a complete rush.

I understand that many of you will oppose my opinion.  I'm not trying to criticize you; I merely wish to notify you of my feeling when people start talking like "haha is that ur brother, hes sooooooo short!!!!!!!!!!!!".  This kind of posting bothers me, I'm not sure why, but I will get a very bad impression of in the future.  I'm sorry if this offends you, or makes you uncomfortable in any way, as I don't mean to do that.  The only purpose of this was to, once again, notify you of my thoughts.  What do you think?

I agree with you. I don't even use the one letter words in text messages. I write out every word completely.

I don't do it much either, especially because I type fast and it usually takes the same time for me to type u as it takes for me to type you.

Re: you know what

I don't use full grammar in chatrooms which are quite fast like MC, I'll only spell words right.

I use full grammar in forum posts such as this, as it will last much longer.

I only use "u", "ur" etc in Twitter, as you have a small amount of space to type and typing full words uses a lot of space.

I indeed hate it when people can't be bothered to use full letters or using words for things they're not intended for. e.g. "thats theres" "there cool" "over their" and my most hated one is "you're stuff is there" or "your wrong". Most hated single letter instead of a word is "u", "you" requires you to move your finger across 4 keys maximum, is it really that hard?

Same. In text messages, it's quicker to write 'to' than '2', as you have to hold down the two key for ages, yet for some reason no one realises that.

You don't <3 my username?  I iz hurtz...

But seriously, we all have our personal preferences.  However the important thing to remember is that things like typing style, grammar, and spelling are not important unless they get in the way of communication.  It's like a regional accent - people from different areas or countries sound different.   It would be pretty dull if we all sounded the same!

That's not to say that these things don't affect how people perceive you though.  They do.  And probably if you were writing for a scientific paper or other formal situation, you would want to adjust your writing to suit the occasion.  But this is not a formal situation - this is just a bunch of friendly Scratchers talking informally.  So use whatever you are comfortable with - just so long as we understand each other  smile

I've never looked at it that way (that the way we type is like regional accents). And you spelt grammar wrong  tongue

Re: you know what

lol  at Paddle and jji7.

I think it is a little annoying after a while because you have to study it for a while to figure out what it says.
Which is more readable: "R U gonna B here soon after U 8?" or "Are you going to be here soon, maybe after you've eaten?"
