App Police, DRM, Corporate Greed and Copyright, a rant by 16skittles

I am posting this forum my Apple iPad. Before last night, I was a strong believer that tablet computers have a long way to go to replace desktops or laptops. They lack a keyboard, USB ports, and many other things that we have come to know and love on our desktops. Yesterday, I was writing a school paper on my iPad. After some getting used to, the keyboard began to feel natural, just as any other keyboard. I made a few typos, but nothing seriously messed up. When I finished, I picked it up, and it was light as a feather. Compared to my friend's netbook, the iPad has a larger screen, more battery life, more portable, and can probably do even more than the computer.
There is one thing that I can't approve of Apple for. That is their "App Store" method of application distribution, on both their mobile devices and their desktops. They super-regulate the apps, charge to get them on the store, and then take a royalty on the sale. As a hobby programmer who just wants to make apps for a small audience and for fun, this is hugely prohibitive.
This brings me to the final section, DRM, Copyright, and corporate greed. DRM stands for digital rights management, and is a prohibitive technology to restrict the use of media. When I got my iPad, I began to take on the task of transferring my music from my mp3 player to the iPad. I ran into a problem: the music was in DRM protected WMA format, not supported by Apple, not supported for converters. So now I'm stuck. I have legally obtained music that I can now do nothing with. It's useless. Here lies the problem. Copyright and DRM are designed to block piracy. The big movie and music companies are making millions of dollars: is it that important to save a few bucks that I can't transfer a few songs?
This rant could continue, but it was first created earlier this morning, I'm going to leave it at shis for now.

No Realnetworks Rhapsody. my parents use it for their mp3 player, I used it for mine, and now I have no use of the music. At least I still have a few songs from Amazon and YouTube downloads XD

That's because it's a subscription service. You can apparently get iPod/Pad/Phone compatible AAC with DRM from it too. Most things don't have DRM anymore but Rhapsody is a subscription service.

I agree, the App Store is highly restrictive. The only way to install other apps is to jailbreak but then you'll lose your warranty although it is legal.

Yeah, Wolfire got really angry at Apple. They released an indie game pack and someone else changed the name and sold it for 19.99$ and Apple took 2 years to take it down, by then the scam took over 3000$ from customers from something which could be downloaded for free.
