All of my friends are people I don't know.

I don't think it really matters... All it does is make it so you can see those people's projects more easily.

Anyway, my-chemical-romance is right, it is more like "following" someone than "friending" them.  If you don't friend them back (and you're not obliged to), they get to see you projects whenever you upload them, and you're friends' projects' section doesn't get clogged up with their projects.  I view it as a compliment.  If someone I've never even heard of before friends me out of the blue, I just say "cool", maybe glance at a project or two, and judge based on that whether to friend them back.  80-90% of the time, I just delete the message.

well, if its dangerous to be on a person you don't know's friendlist, then I'm in major trouble.

especially since half of the website know my first name.

They should just give you the option to turn off the "____ has added you as his/her friend" (or however it is phrased) message. I personaly like having people add me as a friend, wether I know 'em or not, 'cause it means I'll appear on thier front page for making a project with merely an inaminate white background, nothing else. :p
