Improvements to Search

I've posted this several times, but no one's really noticed. So here it is, in its entirety. You can also view the article on the Scratch 2.0 topic about searching.

iCompositions has a great way of doing search results. Once you enter your query and press enter, you get a search result dropdown that sorts your search into three categories; song titles, usernames, and forum posts. It's kind of like Spotlight search for Mac OS X.

Site: http://www.icompositions.com/

This could be adapted into scratch, except with projects, users, galleries, and forum posts.

What the new Search could look like  big_smile

When you type a query, the results would slide out, revealing different categories of the search.

How I made this mockup:
Quite simple, actually.  smile  I used a javascript code to make the website editable.

Code:

javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0

Then I uploaded it into Photoshop Elements via the clipboard and saved it as a png file.

So there you go... how do you like the idea?

The current system doesn't bug me (I don't use it often though  tongue ), but I think I might prefer this better  big_smile

Hmph enjoy your fall - I get a lovely spring... without pans of new leaves.

Re: Improvements to Search

I noticed the new Search is rolling out bit by bit, and the most recent layout is much better than the last  smile

I still promote this idea, though, because...
• It allows for instant, organized results.
• You can click More Results to see the results in the new and improved search.
• The drop down menu allows you to limit your search by topic.
• The sheer simplicity of the matter (though I do see why it would be somewhat challenging to code it)

Why is everyone copying Chris's post?  tongue

I appreciate the praise, though. I'll post it on Scratch Suggestions now  wink

Re: Improvements to Search

I had an idea for searching: have a sort of remix-visualization that extends infinitely. You type a query, and it brings up the most viewed/loved project that matches. It has arms joined to the next closest, and if you click on one of them, they bring up results close to them. If you have a Wii, imagine making a Mii from a look-alike, then apply that to posts/projects.

Re: Improvements to Search

Sounds good in context, Hardmath, but my guess is that people want to spend less time searching and more time doing  wink  However, if you're just browsing, then I can see how this would benefit.

That's just a change Google made to the layout of Custom Search.

Yeah that was a great book.

also, I support, though i mainly think the Forums Search needs to be improved.  hmm

If you are reading this, please read to the end, because if you don't you won't know what's at the end. Don't just skip to the end though otherwise you won't be able to read the middle, which is most important. Now you must be wondering why you just read all that, the reason is you may have not noticed something, read it again and see if you notice it this time  smile

Changed my way of thinking.

Re: Improvements to Search

It actually wasn't my javascript, really xP

But it really helps if you're making mockups based on another site's existing layout.
