Best lightweight Linux distro

I'm thinking of installing it on a USB for use on those pesky sluggish computers you find for free use in hairdressers etc.

What's best? I've got a 2GB drive.

I'll also use it on a 256MB Pentium 4 XP computer.

Any personal preferences you have?

EDIT: I also want to install Scratch on it  smile

I'd say Xubuntu.

Xubuntu. It was designed for that purpose.

Re: Best lightweight Linux distro

If you're going to be running on old computers from a USB flash drive, I'd recommend Puppy Linux.

I agree with this. It's fast and there are lots of packages available for quick install

Re: Best lightweight Linux distro

As usual, I say that Xfce really isn't as light as it claims. It's a great desktop environment, and Xubuntu 11.10 is quite nice, but it's not really good for a Pentium 3. I would recommend Puppy, but I have had quite a bit of difficulty getting Scratch to run on it, so I'll advise an Ubuntu based distro as there are already packages of Scratch for it. Essentially, look into Lubuntu, WattOS, or Madbox (the site is in French, so you'll need to translate it unless you speak French).

Edit: Oh and that 10mb one is called TinyCore. It's nice, but again, no Scratch.

Like TRocket said, just use WINE. It should work.

Okay... but as puppy runs on RAM, is it even possible to install it on the actual USB stick? I guess I'll just have to find out. Thanks for the help  smile
