I have an idea:

Keep the new website at scratch.mit.edu
Have this website at scratch.mit.edu/scratch1.4

Yeah, I do admit, I will miss 1.4, knowing that's what I've known pretty much since I joined Scratch. But, 2.0 will be really cool, knowing all the cool neat extra things you can do!  smile

That would only be 1 page, so make a server called

old.scratch.mit.edu

or something along those lines.

This kind of solution can seem really simple and obvious, until you start to look into the details. For example, we spend tens of thousands of dollars a year moderating Scratch. If we kept the old site, we'd have to moderate two sites: the old, and the new. It's a complex task, and there's just not enough resources / attention to manage it.

Yep, it's totally bittersweet. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm going to miss the current site too - even though I'm looking forward to 2.0.

And, Lightnin (I think it was him, maybe Paddle) said that we might get another trial thing this month, so maybe you'll get used to it because it's going to be longer if they do do it.

Sorry for the necropost, but...

WHY DOES IT HAVE TO COME SO SOON?!?! WHY CAN'T I SPEND MY FINAL DAYS ON 1.4 LONGER? ;m;

Re: Anyone kinda want 1.4 scratch to stay? <:(

I just read the entire thread.

I kinda like S2, but only the new features. The weird icons confuse me, firstly.
The textures are SOOOOOOOOOO much different than the ones we've been used to.
Comment bubbles don't work. Blocks are bigger.
The overall feeling - Scratch feels "softer" in S2, with all the "glow" effects. S1.4 seems more solid, a better "foundation" for other programming languages (Don't ask where I got that analogy). Maybe a texture toggle will fix this part.
S2 is a lot slower, even with the all at once block (which does not actually run it all at once).
Many shortcuts we're used to don't exist in S2, such as putting a C-block above a script to put it in the C.
The whole layout. I haven't seen it, but I can infer 2 things:
Its generally more like facebook or whatever, even if just a bit.
A toggle old layout will solve most complaints.

So, my opinion is: I don't like S2, but mainly the textures (of the program and website) and speed. A toggle texture will solve my, and most other's, complaints.

I agree. I thought it would be nice if there was a "classic" mode.

And it looks too much like facebook T_T

*gasp*
I just got this-ed!
And just making sure, everyone knows about this, right?

Code:

javascript:var p=document.getElementsByTagName('object')[0];p.removeAttribute('width');p.removeAttribute('height');var s=p.style;s.left=s.right=s.top=s.bottom='0';s.position='fixed';s.width=s.height='100%';s.margin=0;p.ASsetEditMode(true)

Paste that in a flash player project's url, and you're into S2!

SiS=Martiscratch's 50 Bits "remix" is not really a remix, its a copy, since I said in the project notes that I had made it 1s1s, but just didn't upload it.

Of course its not that. Its WAY more complicated.

IMO, the decision to use vector graphics is a really poor decision in introducing programming.

With a raster program you can have pixel perfect sensing.

I'm glad to think that the community will always be kind and helpful, the language will always be a fun and easy way to be introduced into programming, the motto will always be: Imagine, Program, Share - Nomolos

Maybe in a later version, the ST will make it possible to choose different themes of the site, and "old Scratch" could be one of them? It would be all the same features, but it would look more similar to 1.4, for those with a severe case of nostalgia.

No, I'm afraid that's not possible.  sad

There's gonna be a lot of sadness when the old site goes - from me as well. Not because I don't think the new site will (eventually - maybe not at first) be better, but because I've spent a lot of time on the old site-  it feels like home in a way that the new site doesn't yet.

I keep thinking we need to have a funeral for the old site, or maybe a going away party? Not sure what to call it yet...  But one idea is to have a Scratch Design Studio where people make nostalgia projects for the old site - kind of a scrapbook kind of thing? I don't know - still thinking of ideas. If you have suggestions, please let me know.
