I think the perspective depends on where you live and how the Hurricane affected you.
I'm pretty sure that most of those living near the coast and still suffering from floodwater would say that the damage brought on by Hurricane Irene was bad as the news made it out to be, while those not badly affected by it would say that it was an exaggeration.

You never know. I'd imagine that it would be hard for them to agree that it was an exaggeration when they have no homes to go back to and have to rebuild everything they once had.

I'm glad that they over rather than under-exagerated. I know people who live in NYC and they got out before the storm hit because of how bad it was supposed to be. If they hadn't gotten out, I would have been really worried. I think it's better that they over-did it because that ment more people listened to evacuation orders and such. If they didn't, then more people would have stayed in the storm's path and in danger.
Plus, you can't always tell what the weather will do
