How big is the file size? If it's over 10 MB, you will have to compress the sounds and images.

500-1000 costumes plus 18 sounds could probably put you over the max size. Try browsing to the folder you saved it in, (Probably "My Documents\Scratch Projects\") and checking the size. (Right click on the project file and select properties)

That's a lot. I think some of them are repeating (having the same file in different sprites). Is there anyway to reduce the number of files?

Yes, that's probably your problem. Try putting all your sounds in the stage and just have a sprite broadcast when a sound needs to be played. Then the stage can receive the broadcast and play the sound.

well... yeah i've seen projects with 600 something scripts, and they worked... hence the only.

Usually if a project has hundreds of scripts, most of them are rather small.
