To rhy of course.

I use my own instant formula.

<when green flag clicked>
<forever>
<set{ <{ FPS }> }to( (( 1 </> (( <timer> <+> 0.00000001 )) ))
<reset timer>
<end>

The + 0.00000001 is so that the program doesn't divide by 0.

Re: The project I'm working on.

Are you adding the sound / music yet?

Also, can you upload another version of the game without any music / sounds when you're done?

It has frameskipping - which to the untrained eye makes it appear as though it's running full speed. My eye is very trained for that kind of thing though - so I don't buy it.  tongue

The sounds and music are in the game already.

Re: The project I'm working on.

So you're still working on it? Does the sound cause lag when it's playing or when it's just there? I was trying to use blank sounds for my projects that could be easily replaced by the real sounds when I was finished the programming, but it didn't seem to make that much difference. Also I scrapped the music when I uploaded the game anyways.

- The game is so advanced that it runs at 12 fps in presentation mode (and I don't even want to say what it's like outside) on the No CPU gamemode Impressive :P
- Because of this - The game has a frameskip feature that allows the game to run full speed (but doesn't get rid of the frame loss) That's nice :)
- It has an advanced scrolling distance based sound system. *crowd awes*
- It will be the biggest game on scratch. Totally believable

I'm afraid that it won't work online. Also the fact that the online player doesn't handle the many sound playing at once and screeches loud enough to destroy your ear drums. And the graphics errors. And the miscalculations.

This is much worse than your SSB game. The lag is caused by the extreme scrolling.

What sort of scrolling causes that much lag?

Sound doesn't lag at all. If anything - the stages which I haven't got the music for yet are laggier (see 14 fps vs 8)

Re: The project I'm working on.

Hmm. Because you said '8 stages', and you (basically) said that there was a CPU, I thought that possibly it was an SSBB game. But you also mentioned it was 4-directional scrolling, and with lots of collision, so it sounds a bit impractical. But is it possible that it's an SSBB game... with a Subspace Emissary-like thing!?

Re: The project I'm working on.

Sorry guys, development for this is going to have to stop. I added more necessary features and the presence of 1 dumb AI and the FPS has dropped to 7, and still I need to add some features.

Development will probably be postponed until Scratch 2.0. I really wanted to get this game working - but scratch can't take the (mostly) graphical and coding strain of it.

My frameskipping technique had flaws, and because of the extremely low framerate controls became hard and calculations became more inaccurate. Running the game without frameskip showcased perfect gameplay, but 1 second lasted about 6. (that's slow, if you didn't know.)

Scratch 2.0 probably still won't be able to handle what you are trying to do.

I think it will.

Flash has native support for the ghost effect (alpha), collisions and many graphics effects, which are the 3 big problems in my game. Things like this have to be coded on squeak and it just isn't fast at all.

Also - the next version of flash (I believe there is already a beta) will have graphics acceleration (usage of the graphics card) which will take strain off of the cpu and allow for faster script processing.

Re: The project I'm working on.

Ok, for your project to be playable it has to go about 6 times faster. Right now the fastest you can make something run is by running it in presentation mode which is what you probably are already doing. If the flash scratch player is made like the current java one is then it will probably be faster, but not 10+ times faster which is what you need.

Also, I am pretty sure that the current version of flash will be used to make the online player.

Actually - it just needs to be about 4x faster. At that point the frameskip can improvise for the rest with little to no problems/setbacks.

Re: The project I'm working on.

Well, since you you are only running it in presentation mode the player will need to be faster than 4 times faster because the java player is much slower than the downloaded one. I can't really tell how much faster it will be because I don't understand how the player is made. I asked a question in the scratch 2.0 thread about this.

In any case I wouldn't count on such high efficiency jumps. If I were to guess I would say that the flash player may be up to 2 times faster than the downloaded presentation mode player.

Keep in mind that java isn't the best platform for things like scratch, games etc

Also - since Scratch 2.0 will be a complete recoding things may be done differently/better optimised.

It may just be translated and not optimized. You can't be sure unless you ask the developers. From what I've been reading java is about as good for web games if not better. Good things about flash are, more people have the player, faster start up time, and easier to develop with.

I am not sure what makes you think it will be so much faster. Everything I have been reading says that java is actually faster.
