@CN12: The Iraq war WAS stopped. The Iraq and the Afghanistan war are two different things. And he did oversee the mission to kill Bin Laden. Bush tried for much longer to accomplish the same thing and was not successful, so it's definitely something he has earned the right to brag about.

@Werdna123: George W. Bush started both wars.

I was watching the debates last night and Undecided Voters had things they could use to report how they were responding to the arguments and such. Once when it switched to Romney, the graph went into the negatives before he spoke.  tongue

Really? Most polls I've seen show Obama slightly ahead.

Also, pretty much all of the polls I can find (except for Fox News, of course) show Obama won the debate.

Yeah.  sad

Really? I watched a focus group in a post debate show, they were all swing voters. Most of them said they had voted for Obama in '08, but the majority said they thought Romney won. They said he seemed presidential, on his game, and collected. I guess it's viewers opinion, but the focus group all said they thought Romney won, and they were all undecided up until then. ^^

Romney told a bunch of lies, and almost every source I can find says Obama won.

I am pretty sure that Obama won, but the way you put it doesn't sound right to me.

I'm sure Obama told some lies too. You are making it sound like Obama is perfect, and doesn't say any lies at all. That's not fair. Nobody's perfect. Not even me.

At least they show Obama winning the electoral vote, which is what really matters:

This isn't an outright lie, but Obama did pretty much dodge the question about oil prices (which is certainly not "completely honest").  It's is probably fair to say that both candidates are excellent at dodging questions  hmm

Your energy secretary, Steven Chu, has now been on record three times stating it's not policy of his department to help lower gas prices. Do you agree with Secretary Chu that this is not the job of the Energy Department?

Obama wrote:

The most important thing we can do is to make sure we control our own energy. So here's what I've done since I've been president. We have increased oil production to the highest levels in 16 years.

Natural gas production is the highest it's been in decades. We have seen increases in coal production and coal employment. But what I've also said is we can't just produce traditional source of energy. We've also got to look to the future. That's why we doubled fuel efficiency standards on cars. That means that in the middle of the next decade, any car you buy, you're going to end up going twice as far on a gallon of gas. That's why we doubled clean — clean energy production like wind and solar and biofuels.

And all these things have contributed to us lowering our oil imports to the lowest levels in 16 years. Now, I want to build on that. And that means, yes, we still continue to open up new areas for drilling. We continue to make it a priority for us to go after natural gas. We've got potentially 600,000 jobs and 100 years worth of energy right beneath our feet with natural gas.

And we can do it in an environmentally sound way. But we've also got to continue to figure out how we have efficiency energy, because ultimately that's how we're going to reduce demand and that's what's going to keep gas prices lower.

Now, Governor Romney will say he's got an all-of-the-above plan, but basically his plan is to let the oil companies write the energy policies. So he's got the oil and gas part, but he doesn't have the clean energy part. And if we are only thinking about tomorrow or the next day and not thinking about 10 years from now, we're not going to control our own economic future. Because China, Germany, they're making these investments. And I'm not going to cede those jobs of the future to those countries. I expect those new energy sources to be built right here in the United States.

That's going to help Jeremy get a job. It's also going to make sure that you're not paying as much for gas.

Well, let's go through that part by part.

The US is more energy independent than it has been in a while.
Due to new ideas that have been discovered, natural gas production has seen a big increase lately.
Doubling fuel efficiency on cars was a very good idea, as it will help save the resources we have and make them last longer
Romney just wants oil companies to do whatever they want, which is a bad idea, because that will destroy our natural resources since nobody is making them follow any rules

Also, I don't think gas prices should go down. When gas prices were low a few years back, it was because the economy was absolutely TERRIBLE! When the economy does badly, prices go down, including the price of gas. Usually, when prices go up, that is also a sign of a good economy (with a few exceptions, such as Zimbabwe, the CSA during the civil war, etc., but not here), so gas prices going up should be a good thing, because it indicates a stronger economy.

It's better for the planet when gas prices are up because people will start riding bikes or walking or using public transportation more.

Yeah, but I don't think like that.

But if it works on it's own system, with the government getting involved, and it helps shows the economy state, why would you want the government to stop getting involved and have it stay at high prices, no matter the state of the economy?

Let's go through it again part by part:
Obama talks about how the U.S. - which he was trying to sound like it was the government, instead of the car companies they gave money to, by saying we instead of U.S. - was up in energy efficiency in cars.
He talks about job opportunities in drilling.
He talks about lower prices for gas.
He didn't answer the question.

However, I do like to argue, which is why I took such an active role here.  tongue
If anybody wants to continue arguing with me, they are welcome to, just be prepared for it to be difficult.

He said that the low gas prices were a result of the really bad economy under Bush. He then also said that he doesn't want that same economy, which sounds like answering the question to me...

The question was:

Your energy secretary, Steven Chu, has now been on record three times stating it's not policy of his department to help lower gas prices. Do you agree with Secretary Chu that this is not the job of the Energy Department?

Discussing energy in general doesn't mean that he answered the question.  He did not state whether it was the energy department's job to lower gas prices.

To be quite honest, I used to be guilty of the same thing (e.g. addressing questions either very vaguely or simply discussing parallel topics), but I've gotten better, especially over the last two years.  Probably the single most important piece of advice to most writers is "address the prompt".  Obama (and Romney) did not address many questions posed to them, but instead responded with a slew of positives and negatives on the general topic the question touched on.  This is, in my opinion, part of the reason the debate(s) sound(ed) so repetitive.

He was asked about whether it was the energy department's policy to lower gas prices, and he said it's not, because what lowers gas prices is a bad economy.
