Re: Summer of Scratch Collab

Hello Liquid Metal:
This summer I am working with a program called Stencyl. It is very similar
to Scratch. I will be back to doing Scratch when the new version comes out.
I have a new concept for doing colabs (similar to remixing). I put my programs
on my Yola website, complete with source code. This allows anyone to remix
my programs and put them on their website. Then i can get their programs and
put them on my website. I think this may be the future of Internet gaming.

Why?

I have a lot going on. Outside of scratch. I have 5 skits to practice for. And I have a lot going on inside scratch. On July 2nd I become curator.

Ok, congrats on curatorial, and have a great summer (whatever you do)!

haha, jk. but seriously.

Anyway, that's unfortunate.  sad

Liquid, why not let the player name him, with a 6- or 8-character limit or something (and only letters)?

I would rather we name him, in order to set his personality, and the first impression that the player will  have of him.

I uploaded a brand new scrolling project to the server. You just add terrain costumes and it works.

I didn't add velocity and I didn't do anything with the movement of the wheel yet, I'm just testing how I'm going to get it to scroll -- I plan to eventually get it to stamp two terrain costumes at a time; It will find your location and stamp the two nearest costumes only, to avoid excessive rendering, but for now, it renders excessively and will stamp every costume of terrain every time you move.

It should work fast once I figure out how to do just 2 at a time..

You were supposed to edit mine - not make a whole new one!

A few points on my scrollX project:
1) It is at least 50x faster (so far - good luck fixing up yours!) (Yours is that slow with ONLY FOUR COSTUMES!)
2) Basic sensing can be accomplished with <touching [terrain1 v] ?> and <touching [terrain2 v] ?>
3) It does not need stamping, so the pen tools can still be used for something else. (Do we need the pen tools available for something else?
4) Color sensing can still be used for precise physics - maybe we want to use this anyway? and then either scroll project would be OK?

For now, we should try to make sure that either scroll project will be as easy to integrate into the main project.

A note on the border - we may use a dashboard extending from the border sprite in this project, so stamping will not have the ugly effects it normally does if we decide to use it, and the border won't look to atrocious, because it will be more then just black lines.

I looked a little at your scroll project, and at a glance, I couldn't figure out how to make it stamp only the two.  If I try harder later, I'll let you know.

Does that mean you will not be working with us this summer  sad  ? What about next (with scratch2.0)?

I've previously had a look at Stencyl, but I didn't really like it.  At first glance, it looked great, being that it could export to flash and iOS, and they are working on export for HTML5 and android.  But after further investigation, it wasn't all that great.  It was hard to get used to, and the cost is astronomical. (yearly $200 (+$100 for an apple account - also yearly) payment for a programming tool! That's insane! - and that is without android or HTML5 export - imagine the price with!)  [If you use the free version, It has a splash screen, that ruins everything, and no professional companies will use it for real games]
Stencyl very much narrows any programming experience (games only!), and is too expensive to become the future of Internet gaming.  When scratch gets flash export without the greenflag, and with vector graphics, maybe scratch will become the future of Internet gaming!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy Stencyling - (is that a verb over there?  tongue ) and that you come back to scratch ASAP!

But we don't need it to be hyper speed. I know mine's slow, but if I can figure out how to make it stamp only two at a time it'll work great. I decided to go with stamping because that would only require one terrain sprite and it would make it less confusing to add on new terrain--we'd still have to figure out essentially the same thing with two alternating terrain sprites (making the right costumes appear and having them alternate is like figuring out which two to stamp at once).

Yeah, I think we should use color sensing, but if you don't want to have the land limited to one color, we could have a sensor underneath the guy's feet and have him fall when the sensor is touching only white (this is after the import, because the blob guy won't rotate like the wheel).

I can't think of anything else to use the pen for, but if you had something in mind we can go back to two sprites.

Sorry about making a whole new one, lol. I was impatient. XD

Also... we are the only programmers active, can the other guys help?

My scroll project already switches to the proper costumes, the only problem was when you get too close to the edges.  I'll have to polish it if you stubbornly refuse.  Maybe I'll take out the wheel, and use a slider for testing.

Our sensors could be a separate sprite, so even with the wheel, it could be made to work.

I'm also impatient, thats why I'll try to fix mine up ASAP.  I am going out for the day soon, but I may be able to get to use Scratch where I am going.

Should I assign everyone to the scrolling? Or what?  Maybe I should put Locomule to work on the color sensing bit (he is also pretty good at that,) and I'll give ber(x4) a graphics job?

Family works.  How about a brother's company is being threatened - and he doesn't know it, and bad things will happen if you tell him - so you need to fix the threat yourself?  Maybe you aren't even a spy in the first place, and someone runs into you on the way and then you are recruited for the FBI or something?  And we do the ranking thing from there?  And you are on your own until the FBI gets involved?  Maybe you have to get through the ranks of the FBI in order to get the job assigned to you - so you are doing some other job in the meantime?

Do you like it so far?

Re: Summer of Scratch Collab

Yes I like the Idea. it sounds good so now we can get on with the game and think about what were adding or should we think more about who you are and what happened?

I think A good name could be andrew or james. They sound like they could be good in representing the character of the player.

Re: Summer of Scratch Collab

I suppose we'll have to let metal509 decide if we can name him Andrew  wink .  I don't really want it to be James, because many people will automatically think James Bond (or will they?).  In the meantime, any other suggestions? What is his brothers name? What is his last name?

Tom and Mike are both fairly innocent names, and I don't like any of those last name choices.

They are so random! I guess we don't need a last name yet:

What is his brother's company called? what does it do?

Locomule; berberberber; assignments for you have been put on the front page.

Ok, so the main character's name is Andrew, and his brother's name is John (aka Johnny).  metal509, any thought on their last names?  And btw, I put some more projects on the site: some starting graphics for the game and an updated scrollX project.  Go have a look, and let me know what you think.

I was thinking a manufacturing company.  Something along the lines of stealing patents or market manipulation.  But not too simple.  Something creative.

Should it be big(Car)or small(credit card) type of company

Re: Summer of Scratch Collab

A company that makes credit cards? That's ridiculous - but it might just work.  Lets think about it.  It can be a big company, or a small company that will become a big company.

John's company makes product A.
Is product A an invention or inventions made by outside inventors, or maybe made by John himself?  Maybe it is an improvement on a current invention? (What theoretical improvement could be made to credit cards? or any other modern-day item)
What exactly is the threat to John's company? Who is behind it, and what does he have to gain?  Is he doing it for evil purposes, or does he think he is doing the right thing?
