Macs can run most windows exe files using WINE.
So can Linux.

Although Wine is pretty brilliant, especially for small applications, it doesn't run everything.

True. Very true but it still makesninvalid the argument that Mac or Linux has less available software.

Windows supporting most decent programs, plus it's relative ease of use, are pretty much the only reasons I'm still using Windows and not some Linux distro as my main OS. While WINE or similar programs may run most Windows programs, it's horrible when it comes to emulating games or other demanding programs, and it's really much less of a bother to run the program directly on your OS of preference.
First version I've used is 95, currently using 7. Not sure whether I like this version or XP better, I haven't used the latter in a long time.

That's true but you'll be able to find alternatives that are as good if not better on Mac and maybe on some linucs distros.

In general, people don't want alternatives; they want what they're used to. As long as what they're used to isn't for another OS like Mac or Linux, they'll be a lot more likely to stick with Windows.

I know what you mean but for the record, I enjoy trying out alternative software. I guess its different for the office workers who had a 1 year course on how to use office 2003 or photoshop

Well a lot of people, like you and I, do, but the majority just like to stick with what they're used to and what they know gets the job done.

Windows 8 is gonna be cool. There's just a lot of haters because it's probably the biggest change since Microsoft left DOS.

On the desktop, I'd use XP or 7. Honestly, the client OS doesn't really matter. I just need a good enough OS to SSH into the machines I work on.
In my opinion, Windows has no place on the server market.
Also, most high-end companies use RedHat Enterprise Linux for their workstations, mostly because of its fine support. It is also cheap Windows Enterprise is very expensive, and doesn't beat $49 per year.

I think it's going to be a failure...

I just hate Windows Explorer in Windows 8. It always freezes when I right click on files and stuff like that. It still doesn't have tabs. I'd rather use Better Explorer, but it takes ages to open. For file copying and stuff, I use TeraCopy and for archiving, 7-zip.

I don't see why people who like 7 hate Vista. They're barely different.
Vista was basically rushed, probably because MSFT hadn't made another Windows OS since XP. It has lots of bugs and glitches and has very bad performance on most older computers.
I have Vista, and it runs fine. I've only had 1 BSOD (Nothing was wrong, really. It didn't need repair.)

Yeah, me too. Although I did get several BSOD's, only because my particular model was prone to overheating. Nothing a cooling pad fan couldn't fix.

I think Microsoft should totally redesign the kernel, so it won't slow down over time.
Or maybe thats what they want...That's why Linux rocks. Seriously, the only reason to use Windows is program compatibility. So if you get a big surge of user switching to Linux, people will start making programs for it.
Rethinking, this may be what they want. They're proprietary. If they make the computers slow down after a while, people will get disgusted by it, and buy a new one. Which makes Microsoft more money. So, this may be intentional, unfortunately.

Windows 8 is already a failure. I installed it over my debian set up and pledged to use it for at least 10 days. HORRIBLE. Never have I seen a worse OS. Sure, the idea is cute, and it may work on tablets, but not on a desktop. Imagine hundreds of thousands of businesses and industries relying on Windows 8. Not going to happen.

Exactly. There is a reason why the iPad OS is completely different from OSX, desktops and tablets should have different OSs because they are used for different purposes. This some thing that Apple knows, yet Microsoft haven't realised yet

I love Windows but don't like the new look of Windows 8. Apparently there's going to be an app store, which may mean that you won't be able to download raw EXEs and run them anymore. I thought Windows was supposed to be about familiarity.
