School's out, I have no access to Scratch for the summer and my mind is screaming to create something. Over the summer, I'm going to attempt to type an MLP fanfiction so that I can share it with my friends. The problem? I can't decide what my fanfiction should be about. Should it be a Slice of Life, or should it be an Adventure? I do have ideas, it's just that I don't know what to choose.
I want the story to be show-accurate, and a good read for people of all ages. I'm going to try to make the characterization as close as possible.
Here's a list of possible ideas:
- Two characters switch bodies after one of Twilight Sparkle's spells goes haywire
- Pinkie Pie discovers video games, and gets hooked
- I am transported into Equestria, where I meet the Mane 6 and become friends with them (NOT a romance fic)
(I have decided to stick with the first idea. The other two aren't original enough.)
So, please give me some story ideas. If I like them and think I can write them, I'll add them to the list of possible ideas.
I'm also going to need help deciding what would be the best idea for me to use. Please offer me some advice for this fanfiction, and thanks in advance.

I'd prefer your first idea, but it's still cliché. I love origin fics, so of course I'm going to suggest writing that; and Discord is awesome so you should totally include him. I prefer Adventure, but if you can get Slice of Life like something that'd happen in an episode I'd totally read it (well, I'd read what you write anyway, but you know what I mean).
EDIT: Oh, and sea ponies. Shoo be doo.
I actually think a sea pony fic could be written quite well. If it's dealing with the discovery of sea ponies and how anthroponiets (I dunno, puns fail with me-I was trying to go for pony anthropologists) missed them for so long, despite the cave art. Maybe Twi discovers them. I'd quite like a stunt sea pony and RD to be enemies because that'd be totally awesome!
I've always had a soft spot for Gilda, who was just protective of her friend-and griffon culture could be very different from pony culture.
And of course, zebra culture, changeling, buffalo. Fics that create a more substantial world and alright by my standards.

The first idea's my favorite, too. It seems like a great idea for an actual episode. If I use that one, it's going to be a Slice of Life story.
I don't know how I can include Discord in the story, though...
Maybe I can put in a quick reference?
Oh, and I have a feeling I'm going to totally nail Fluttershy's characterization if I use her in the story.

I just did a big long edit, if you want to read that.
Discord was mostly a joke, but if it seems natural to you go ahead and do it!

I'm going to focus the story on the Mane 6; I know nothing about sea ponies and I can't see myself characterizing Gilda well.
I'm thinking I'll just stick with the first idea I had and get started.
And I have a perfect idea for a Discord scene.

Haha, sorry. Tell me what your fimfiction account is (if you're posting it on there) once you're done/feel comfortable sharing it.

I like the 1st idea the most, the 2nd idea doesn't seem like it can be too funny or interesting and I'm not sure how the 3rd one will turn out
Offline
I would stay far away from the 3rd idea unless you're a good author and you know you can do something original with it... it's a horribly stigmatized trope and rarely turns out well. The first could be good, although it's been done before in a couple different ways, which is not to say that you couldn't do it, just that you'd have to be sure to be original.
There are plenty of sub-communities dedicated to fanfiction as well, so those may be worth visiting for help. Good luck!

Maybe something like Cupcakes. JK.
I like the first. The second doesn't seem like it really fits the show.

I've already started working on it; I'm going to use the first idea.
It starts out with Twilight trying out a spell on Rainbow Dash that allows other ponies to teleport by themselves. However, she accidently casts the spell on Fluttershy, too. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy eventually teleport into the same place and get stuck together. Twilight uses a spell to separate them, but messes it up. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy end up switching bodies. To make matters worse, Twilight doesn't know a spell that can switch them back. She tells them that they will have to spend a day in each other's shoes while she tries to figure out the solution. It'll be sort of a Comedy and Slice of Life.
I still haven't thought of a title for it yet. I would appreciate if someone would suggest possible scenes I could use, too. I want to make sure this story has good, original humor.

So are you going to try to put your own unique spin on it or try to make it seem as much like a real episode as possible?

In a way, I'm going to try to do both.
So far, I've written up to the point where Twilight casts the teleportation spell. I'm not sure I characterized Twilight very well, but I could really hear Rainbow Dash saying what I wrote.

I hope that it's a bit harder to figure out than to just find it in a book

I've been considering trying my hand (hoof) out at fanfiction too, I thought of a Twist-centric sad fic because the fandom is seriously lacking Twist-centric stories.
Sadly, these 3 ideas you mentioned in your first post (switching bodies, pony plays videogames, and the last is pretty much every bad HiE fic in a nutshell, no offense) are really overdone. But I see you're going with the first already, you could twist that enough to make it unique and different from other stories with the same theme.
Personally I tend to like Slice of Life fics more if it's one-shot, but I like them adventurous when we're talking about a series.

I don't like fanfiction in general, but insert fiction is especially bad.

I've never actually found Twist interesting. :'(

Looking back at that third idea, I kind of regret considering that one. It was sort of a "last resort" idea if the other ideas didn't turn out well. The second idea randomly popped into my head while I was creating this thread. I should have stuck with the first idea from the beginning. I'm going to try my best to make it unique from other fictions. Although the method that is used to make Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy switch bodies reminds me of a certain Spongebob episode...
Don't expect it to be amazing; this is only my first time writing an MLP fanfiction and I may have a few struggles while writing it.
I tend to make things pass too quickly when I write stories, so that could be a problem.

I actually like writing MLP fanfictions in my spare time too. I never share my stories though.
If you do want to write a story, though, here are some tips. First, know your characters. Do you want to use characters from the MLP canon, or make up your own? Also, come up with a creative storyline. Typically, as I write an MLP fanfic, I like to imagine it as if it were an actual episode of the show. Usually, those kind of stories are really enjoyable.
You probably have a creative mind, so try to come up with something original. It doesn't have to be something totally new that no one's ever done before, though. As for the genre, it could be a Slice-Of-Life, shipping, or something like that. I recommend making a story that's humorous. Or, you could mix genres together to create something entirely new!
Also, here's an idea. If you know of a fanfiction called "Fallout: Equestria"...well, it's so legendary that it's sort of spawned a fanbase of it's own. If you want to write a story that takes place in the Fallout: Equestria universe, you can read the original story if you want, but that'll take forever (the original story is about 2000 pages long), or read some other fan stories to get a good idea of what the setting is like. But doing a Fallout: Equestria fic means that it'll have to be dark, morbid, violent, and extremely serious. So that may not be that great of an option, but it's entirely your choice.
And if you want to share your stories with the world? Well, I wouldn't recommend doing it here on Scratch. You should probably post your stories on FanFiction.Net, or even better, FIMFiction.net, which is specifically for MLP. Also, if you're really willing to take it up a level, submit it to Equestria Daily!
Hope this helped!
Also, I HIGHLY recommend that you do not write a story that involves you getting transported to Equestria. Those stories are extremely cliche, and people just don't enjoy them anymore.

The first part sort of sounds like this one Spongebob episode, where Squidward and Spongebob get fused together cause of one of Sandy's experiments.
It would be interesting in MLP though. Also, I think I would recommend just sticking with the switching of bodies. And instead of Fluttershy, it should be Applejack. That would be better because Rainbow Dash wouldn't know what it's like being an earth pony with no wings, and Applejack will have to learn to use her wings.

I'm going to try to make it seem like an actual episode. Don't be surprised if I get carried away though. I'm still an amateur at this.

It'll be a comedy/slice of life. RD and FS learn what each other's lives are like.

I don't have time to read 2000 pages.
I like to write stories that everyone can enjoy, so there's not going to be any gore.

I plan to do that in the future. However, I don't have an account on fimfiction yet. I'll post the story on the Sausage MLP Forums first, then I'll post it here. Once I get a fimfiction account, I'll post it there too.

I feel stupid for even considering that.

Wow, you noticed that too? Yeah, I was kinda low on options for how to make them switch bodies in a creative way. Although I guess this doesn't count as creative...

Aw, dang it. I should have done that instead. Unfortunately, I've already started and it's too late to change that now. I was too eager to do Fluttershy's character.
One problem I have is that I always overestimate myself. I have high hopes for what I can do, but I usually miss the mark.

Actually, I might be able to replace Fluttershy with Applejack at this point. I haven't gone too far, and Fluttershy only has 2 or 3 lines right now. The problem is, my brother really likes one of the lines Fluttershy speaks. It's a well-done scene in my opinion, but I might have to end up sacrificing a great characterization for a great plotline. I'm still going to try to include Fluttershy though... and a short Discord scene for jukyter.

Pffft, I have odd MLP likes. You don't have to include it. I mean, I listen to Call of the Sea Ponies on repeat!
And the RD/AJ idea sounds great! They're both very different characters, stuck to their beliefs.

Yeah, I'm still going to keep the Fluttershy line stored somewhere though. It was cute.
The Discord scene I'm planning is where RD argues that they should just shatter his statue to destroy Discord permanently.

My eyes literally widened then. When did I get so attached to a cartoon villain?
A cartoon trickster god. Yeah, seems too much like Coyote.
