Awesome idea! My only suggestion: maybe it should be a week, rather than a day? A day is kinda short, and not everyone will have time to make a project on that particular day.   

As to the earlier debates - I probably shouldn't rekindle them, but yeah - I'd say that the idea for an airplane was totally a remix. Lots of people had been thinking and working on it before the Wright brothers. They combined a bunch of other ideas and mixed in some of their own. But without the ideas they built their new ones on, they'd have had nothing.

What about Edison's lightbulb? (yep, the very image we use to indicate a new, bright idea!)
Nope - total remix. He just refined it.
"Edison did not invent the first electric light bulb, but instead invented the first commercially practical incandescent light" - Wikipedia article on Edison.

And DNA? That's the ultimate remix! We should all wear T-shirts that say "Based on (our mother and father.)"

For some reason, our culture tends to invent hero stories where people just spontaneously think up stuff. And it's true, some growth happens that way - but it's always borrowing from and building on a foundation of other's ideas. It's just that we don't notice that so often, perhaps because of "Loss aversion" - see episode 4 of Everything is a Remix. (It's about 15 minutes long.) http://vimeo.com/36881035

Good suggestion idea, I think your right, some more time would allow more people to remix. And why not have it this week? I'll update the first post. 

And your right, most everything is a remix.
