how far do two computers need to be from each other in order to use mesh together if distance even matters?

Distance does not matter, it has to be on the same NETWORK.
what, exactly, does that mean?

As I understand it, Mesh uses a network connection, not some sort of local connection, so distance makes no difference. However, you have to use Hamachi to connect yourself and your friend in the same network, but the computers themselves can be as far apart as they need to be.

Here, let me explain it as I run my home network.
Being on the same network means you all share an internet connection, or or connected to a central hub (usually a modem or router).
However, you can use Hamachi which creates a virtual network over the internet.
