The Transit of Venus

WARNING:  NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN WITHOUT SPECIAL EQUIPMENT.  NORMAL SUNGLASSES ARE NOT SAFE.

See it live here.  6 PM June 5th - 12 AM June 6th EDT.

This rare astronomical event signifies Venus crossing exactly between Earth and the Sun.  It is one of the most rare predictable events, and another won't happen until 2117.  And I saw it!  The Sun peeked through the clouds, and I could see Venus both through a specially filtered telescope (the clouds on the solar disc looked really cool) and through special glasses.

Has anyone else seen it online or in person?

According to NASA, that will work as long as the glass is #14 or higher.   smile

Well, you won't get to see it again until 2117.  Hope you enjoy the wait!   tongue

Re: The Transit of Venus

I may have seen it with an improvised setup. I used sunglasses (omg so dangerous) but using the properties of polarization. Using lenses from an old pair I overlapped them (rotating them) to block out as much light as possible. I did see a spot, I'm not sure if it was Venus or not. I'll just say it was Venus.  wink

Disclaimer: Don't try this at home kids. We're just throwing science on the walls and seeing what sticks.

It's cloudy where I live and I don't have a telescope or eclipse glasses or a welding helmet but I'm watching the livestream.

Re: The Transit of Venus

We had clear skies today, and it was perfect weather for transit-gazing. It was amazing. We watched it in a local observatory - they were selling those sunglasses for $3 each. It was amazing.

Shame I couldn't see it. Instead, I was watching the Diamond Jubilee. My brother is in to astronomy, I'm surprised he didn't see it either!

D:

WHY IS THAT MORE IMPORTANT THAN AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL EVENT THAT OCCURS ONCE EVERY 105 YEARS?!

Seriously, would you like to watch an old person on a balcony or a NASA special?

People are ridiculous.

Uh...
The reason the transit of Venus happens is because of this:
(sun) ---- (venus)---(earth)
If you go a little further it's like this:
(earth) --- (mars)
You may have seen something similar but a Transit of Mars is impossible  tongue
Maybe you saw the transit of Mercury.

some people may take that offensively
besides, there have been many transits in the past but this diamond jubilee is the second one ever making it a rarer sight
