My brother insists that a major problem with modern games is that they're too much like films. Nothing you do affects the outcome. You simply play through a set story and have no control over the what happens. I disagree entirely. I think a game having a plot, such as Portal 2, makes it a lot better and more enjoyable. What do you think? Do you think that games having a fixed plot are a bad thing?

so your brother shouldnt be complaining about modern games as much as he should be complaining about games in general if hes going to be like that

I agree. But he still thinks that people have been doing it wrong for all these years.

show him skyrim (or any good rpg for that matter) and demonstrate that it all depends on the games you play

I think boh types have their place, but has he tried minecraft? Itried it out today, and it doesn't have a plot, except for the fact you rule the world! (by default, cause you're the only person alive)

I don't think it's much of a problem, many early games were made in consoles with such limited potential that there was no place for an open story, yet they were still enjoyable. That's a "no."

In the MOTHER series, the first two games were a bit more free where you could wander around the world and even go back to the beginning of the game whenever you wanted. MOTHER 3 was linear instead and was divided into chapters, but it's still the most popular game in the series.

It all depends. With a fixed plot game, you don't affect the outcome, although you do still have to face the challenges. When you finish the storyline though, you're done. Without a plot, in an open world/sandbox game, there is no limit to the things you can do, so you can keep playing indefinitely.
