Computers in movies - Seriously?

I don't know if you guys have noticed, but computers and things in movies are really misleading. They make it seem like programmers all use green and black themed desktops with binary floating on the desktop.

I think the earliest one I can think of, is the one in Jurassic Park. They show a "Unix" system as a 3D visualisation of a file system? I thought Unix was originally command line  tongue

Re: Computers in movies - Seriously?

Well Hammonds was a millionaire and everything and hired the best programmers so I'm sure they could have modded Unix to be a 3D file system.

I know what you mean!

Family/kids movies tend to show computers as this giant button panel where you can just press a button and hack through a Government site.  tongue

Either that, or you type things into a glass panel with keys that magically appear and disappear, and the whole desktop looks like eye-candy to the max  tongue

Re: Computers in movies - Seriously?

Yeah, computers in movies pretty much defy all logic, but that's true of pretty much anything in movies, especially when it's something most people don't understand.

Certainly true.
It's rather annoying seeing technology misrepresented in the media.

Re: Computers in movies - Seriously?

Think about all the bad press robots get in the media! If you study robotics people instantly start saying "oh, you'll probably be the one that brings on robot Armageddon, then!". Which is foolish because they get the movie version of robots with guns and such, not the real versions that can barely walk  tongue

Re: Computers in movies - Seriously?

In half the movies that I've seen, the computers are iMacs or MacBook Pros.
And there are no Mac Minis or Windows PCs.

I agree.  It's always Apple.  What happened to all the Windows computers?

They failed.

And guess how much they spend for movie advertising? "Absolutely nothing" according to this Appadvice article. On one 2011 movie, The advertising was worth over $23 million, but Apple got it for free because people see i and Apple products as cool.  wink

Re: Computers in movies - Seriously?

I think they usually use Apple computers because they look clean and they are cool and stuff.

They tend to use really complicated looking computers for "hacking" scenes, such as the one in "National Treasure" (remember the van?  tongue )

Haha yeah that movie
Most computers in movies are either from the prehistoric era or subtle advertising

Oh yeah that one.  Although I would guess that the guy built his own computer and OS, so that's not quite as wrong.  Not quite.
