File > New > set your dimensions (360x480 is fine) > click ok
Now paint with the paint tool and pencil tool. To change the colour, simply click the black colour selector and change it to a colour you want.

After you finish editing or creating your image, it depends on whether you have Gimp 2.6 or 2.8.
In 2.6, choose File > Save as > then type the file name as "filename.gif"
In 2.8, choose File > Export > then type the file name as "filename.gif".
If you want to edit a gif file, choose File > Open > then choose your gif file.

Ok so if I edit my icon, do I just edit it and export as .gif? I got 2.8

Open a GIF file and look to the Layers window. The frames in the GIF will each be a separate layer. Select the layer you want to edit and hide all other layers.

And then to save it so it animates itself...?
At least 60 seconds have to pass between posts. Please wait a little while and try posting again.

As long as you have more than one layer on your image you will see it.
File > Export > set filename to "filename.gif" and click ok > You see a window asking if you want to save as animation. Say yes. > done.
