What are art trades?

I know i'm not knew to scratch(i'v been on scratch for about 2 years now) but i still aren't 100% sure what an art trade is. Here is what i think it is(tell me if i'm right):

1 person makes a picture for the other person and then the other person makes a picture for the person.But do they make it at the same time?

You are correct.
You request art from another person, and they request art from you.
Then, you trade the art.
