Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

What are your thoughts on this machine. Now I haven't watched the news today (oh well, I'll just do poorly in CEFL XD), but apparently tomorrow they are booting this machine up. Now they actual recreation won't happen until October.

What is it?
The LHC is supposed to recreate the big bang. It takes particles and tries to get the dark matter (something smaller than atoms). It is in Switzerland and 17 miles long. People speculate it will cause a black hole that will envelope the Earth despite the Scientists who are workign on it saying that no harm could/will be done.

Note: I haven't actually found super credible resources- just YouTube and another site (a while back). And CEFL is the Current Events Football League.

I don't see what the fuss is about us dying. There are trying to prove the Big Bang theory. If they do, they might even make a mini world  big_smile

Re: Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

Actually, a pretty reliable source would be CERN's homepage, or Wikipedia's entry on CERN

Just to point this out, dark matter isn't just matter smaller than an atom. It really is Anti-Matter, or the opposite. Its extremly rare and one gram of the stuff would blow a city block. Oh, and it explodes when it comes in contact with regular matter. Great for bombs, if we can get a steady source for it.

But are they discussing it? And they turned it on!

Re: Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

They turned it on, but nothing will happen now. think of it like a test- to see if it will work. Remember the fear was a black hole engulfing the world? Well, that would only happen once they start colliding the beams. They only shot one today. This article explains that they won't start the potentially deadly collisions for like a week or so

actually wikipedia is not reliable, although it is corect most of the time. I'm not alowed to use it on esay's much less my DEP (the biggest project of the year) (I have NO CLUE what it stands for but hay, thats what they call it.

This is probably goingto start a panic just like the december 31 1999. They had a funny familly guy episode on that: http://www.familyguynow.com/watch.php?id=203

I think scienttists are tampering with things that should be left alone and to tell the truth, I am kinda scared

Re: Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

Lol. This is like the perfect Half-Life 1 scenario: Super huge research complex does a test, test goes horribly wrong, the Earth is overrun with aliens. Except, in this case it wouldn't be aliens, but maybe a super explosion.

I think this is a great thing. Scientists could figure out ways to power spaceships with something they have learned from CERN

They aren't trying to find out ways to power space ships, they are trying to gain complete understanding of everything.

The video to the right of this page explains that the proton collisions created by the LHC happen regulary in Earth's upper atmosphere.

I agree, though I'm not too scared to die, I'm scared to be in immense pain before dieing but not dieing.

I'm scared of after dieing and if I die a certain way that usually kills (like a shot to the head) but survive and in immense pain. Though being sucked into a Black Hole. Wonder what it would feel like…

Re: Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

You might not even die, it is justpredicted that you would die, we haveb't sent a probe into a black hole yet. Have anyone here read Sphere by michael crichton. It proposes a new theory for black holes

Re: Large Hadron Collider (LHC)

Just a question: What would happen if you got sucked into a black hole? Is it a whole new universe? Or do you just go into the hole and when it explodes, die?

PS because of this topic I decided to redo my signature (It's an exploding planet, see?)

My dad has this book called "Death by blackhole". It's about all the ways the universe could kill us. I forget how my dad explained it, but when you go into a black hole, time slows down. As you fall in, if you flick a flash light every second, and people are watching, it will seem like every second at first. But as you get farther in, it becomes every 10 seconds. Then every minute, and so on.

You can read more about that in the book.

That would *! I mean, you would eventually die of starvation, dehydration, or something. But it would take many more years of pure boredom because of slowed down time

Eventually, you get crushed into an atom. Even light doesn't survive a black hole.
