Dune, by Frank Herbert is a great book (albeit, long). I know it is kind of a classic, but I thought it was still worth mentioning.
I won't list books, but here are some authors I've fallen in love with:
- Iain Banks
- Orson Scott Card (not just the Ender series )
- Timothy Zahn (less so now, but I used to be pretty obsessive)
I remember loving Brennan's Faerie Wars (haven't read them in a while though).
Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series are pretty good too (probably below my grade level though .

I just got done reading a book from Orson Scott Card called "Path Finder", it's an epic book.

"The mysterious Benedict Society" is a great series that's sort of a mystery, and sort of an adventure series.
