[BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

This thread will be used to discuss BuzzCraft, the first true Scratch MMOG.

We are not currently looking for new members, but your ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Current Staff:
Fish: Subtitles, logo, main menu, music, story
Fire219: Graphics, music, sound effects, story
Soft319: Unknown

BuzzCraft started as an idea from jonnydean01, who invited us three, and some others to help him make an MMOG (massively multiplayer online game). Most of the team, including JD1 have left, and only us three are left. We haven't done any work on the game for about a year, but we have decided to bring it back. We will try to have all the graphics, sounds, and story done before Scratch 2.0. So, we need your (the community) help! We will ask your opinion on things, ask for ideas, item suggestions, etc. in this thread.

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

We want your opinion on our story so far! We wrote it long, long ago, in a galaxy fairly close to this one. Should we scrap it and write a new one? Do you like this one? If we keep it, what should we add?

-Intro- It all started with the dare. The dare that turned your life upside down. Literally. Some weird creatures, like half pig, half human monsters, came up to you on your way home from school and dared you to jump off the cliff near your school. People say that there's a trampoline down there. You're supposed to land on it, and hopefully come all the way back up. You don't really have a choice, unless you want to get eaten by these pigs. So, you jump. And fall. And fall. You look up at the laughing monsters. Out of the corner of your eye, you think you see a glowing outline of a human below you. You look down at it. It's gone. Could it just be your imagination? The ground is coming closer and closer. There is no trampoline. But, if you squint you can see the faded outline a little. It seems like you'll land right on it. It's like your shadow. It no longer matters. You're going to die. You close your eyes. All of a sudden your stomach lurches, and you're thrown upside down. But, you're still standing on the ground. Yet, you're upside down. Whaaat? You look down and see the sky, and the monsters at the top of the cliff walking away. It's like a mirror. You can also see the outline, right where you fell, glowing bright as ever. You look up, and see that you are in a strange building. It's like some evil castle from a video game. There's something weird about it, other than the fact it's some evil castle. It's some otherworldly place. You can't quite put your finger on it....

There's the intro. Give us your opinions, and we'll post chapter one tomorrow.

I want to read more! You are a great author, and I don't think the number of people willing to sign up for this collab will be average...

Glad you like it! If you want to read more about the game, here's a link to the old thread: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=34524

Fire219 and I wrote the story together almost two years ago, I think. We wrote the prologue, and the first three chapters. Do you think we should keep this story, or write a new one?

I'll be posting the next chapter tomorrow for you to read.  smile

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

Our MMO was the first started, early in 2010. We aren't the first completed MMO, although we aim to be the first made with Scratch 2.0. Also, *brohoof*.

Also, for those who care, here's a link to the beta version of the original BuzzCraft concept thing: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/AwesomeFish/2485571

It could be a mis-conception. The first true MMO is Virtual Space, the second DragonThunder, and their on only 2 true MMOs. BuzzCraft, or any johnydeen method MMOs don't quite count, due to speed issues. They can support enough players to be considered massive (and their are many bugs)

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

BuzzCraft will not be built on any of JD1's engines. The old beta I uploaded was partialy created by him, but the final version won't be anything like it. It will hopefully support many players.

No, but what will it's server be made in, precisely?

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

We hope to see support integrated in Scratch 2.0, though I doubt it. We haven't thought on it much, but I have basic Java knowledge and should be able to host a server.

Probably Scratch. Before you start complaining about how it will be slow, it will be in Scratch 2.0, which is A LOT faster than 1.4. In my own tests, 2.0 Prealpha (Scratch Day '11 version) is actually, believe it or not, at least 200x than 1.4.

This assumes 2.0 will have mesh support (the prealpha doesn't).  tongue

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

Stuff you may want to look at:

An old intro made by Fire219: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/AwesomeFish/2486561
Box art I made a while ago: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6532603/BuzzCraft/box.png
A concept dagger I made: (good thing I'm not working on graphics) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6532603/BuzzCraft/awesome%20dagger.png
Pokemon-style subtitle template I'll be using for the game: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6532603/BuzzCraft/Subtitle%20Template.BMP

Your opinions are greatly appreciated, we'd love to here what you thing we can do to make stuff better. Also, I'm working on redesigning the logo (you can see the old version on the box art image I linked to) right now, and your input is more than welcome! What did you like about the old one? What didn't you like about the old one? How can I improve upon it?

Again, thanks for your input!

I don't think it will--the protocol mesh runs on isn't supported in 2.0.  sad  However, I am making a modification to implement some mesh-like support.

Oh yea..... the mesh protocol in Scratch 1.x is Squeak-only.  hmm

We might use your mod if you can get it done in time to use in BC, and if 2.0 doesn't have a built-in mesh equivalent.  smile

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

Here's chapter one of the story:

-Chapter One-
You hear a voice coming from an intercom. "Attention staff and students. Sorry for the interuption. There is an intruder in the building, this is a code green. I repeat, this is a code green. Thank you, and have a nice day." "Whaaat? I thought this day couldn't get any worse, but it did. This is a school. Or some giant tortue chamber for bad students. Wait... isn't an intruder alert a code red? Who cares, I should be hiding, there's a code re... green! Er.. I'm the intruder, aren't I?" "Kid, shut up. They'll hear you." I scream and look around. "Who are you? WHERE are you?" "Nice going kid, now we're all gonna die. I'm a misshapen. You're a human, I see. Us misshapen are invisible. Other than our bright orange eyes, which we try to camaflauge. We're alchemests. All of us misshapen. I assume you need a potion. Everyone needs a potion. Just get me the ingredients and I'll make it. By the way, misshapen can sometimes read minds. Only once in a while. I see you could probably use a pygmacon potion. Turns you into one of those pig monsters. You'll be able to sneak around easily, and the ingredients are easier to get than the invisibilty potion's. I warn you though, the potion tastes horrible." You see a scroll lift itself from the floor and unfold beside the floating orange eyes. "A bubbling sapphire mixture. It smells like fruit and dirt, but tastes like vegetables and blood. Well, I wouldn't drink it if I didn't have to, but you obviously do. I'll need the blood of a rat, a petal of a pink flower, and an inch of yarn." [You then must kill a rat in the kitchen, which has been evacuated, take a piece of yarn off the floor in one of the bedrooms, and find a flower in the garden, which somehow grows all it's plants on concrete, without water or sunlight. If you step inside a patrolling guard's sight range, they kill you and you respawn in the armory with the misshapen. After completing the quest, return to the misshapen for a cutscene.] "Good job, now drink up." You drink the potion and cough. "Perfect, you look just like those pigs! Now ask one of those guards for a master key, 'cause you lost yours. Then escape, and run fast, until you find the elves. They have pure white skin and purple hair. They'll probably be practicing their magic somewhere. Tell them you were sent by Skyflame. Good luck!" You run outside and tell a passing guard: "I think I might know where the intruder is, but I lost my master key, can I borrow yours?" "Whatever." You take the key and run outside. And run. And run.

Your feedback is welcome as always!
I'll post the next chapter tomorrow.

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

Here's chapter 2 of the story:

-Chapter Two-
You keep running, until you run out of breath. "Where am I, anyway? Is this some detention center for these "misshapens"? And if it is, am I even on Earth anymore? Or is it some strange new world, unknown to most humans?" You stop your pondering when you remember you are supposed to still be running. you continue to run for a few minutes, until you see something very strange looking. It has pure white skin, purple hair, and is practicing magic, just as the misshapen you assume is named Skyflame, said. You walk, or float, as these weird pigs seem to do, towards the elf. The elf looks up from its magic-performing, and freaks out as it looks at you. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!" You quickly say "Stop screaming! I am not a pig!" It stops screaming, and says "Ah, pygmacon potion." "I think that is what Skyflame said." "Oh, you were brought to me by Skyflame? Grab my arm, I will take us somewhere more private. You grab his arm, and he does some magic, and you are teleported to a small hut. You have to crouch to move around. The elf tells you to sit, but you refuse when you see how small the chair is, saying "Won't the chair break?" "No, I enchanted it with a Undestructablity Charm." You sit down. "I understand you are wondering where you are." "Yes, and I want to know how I can get out." "Oh, this is going to take a while."

"You are in the Realm of the Eight Infernal Fears. It is split into 8 domains, each ruled by a different ruler. When you first entered this land, you were in the Pigman section, the first domain. The pigmen are as evil as they get, and truley, aren't the brightest bulbs of the bunch, if you know what I mean. You are currently in the Elf section, the second domain. We elves are neutral, as in not on the good or bad side. We prefer to stay out of the constant good-and-bad fight here in the Realm, and practice magic instead."

You let all of this soak in, and then say: "Ok, but how do I get out?" The elf replies: "The only way to get out is to join the 8 pieces of the God Medallion. Each part is guarded closely in the center of each 8 domains." "Why haven't the pieces been joined before?" "There is the problem. Each domain's creatures want to be the only ones to get out. They refuse to settle their arguments, and make peace. If you want to get out, you must get the pieces." You say: "Doesn't sound too hard!" "If you think it isn't hard, you have made a big mistake. Along with being guarded by creatures, there is also a Infernal Fear in your way. It might be poison snakes, or some snake guy with a wand. It depends on what you are scared of. But I am getting ahead of myself! Before you can even THINK about getting the God Medallion pieces, you must pick your side. If you pick the good side, I will take you to the Dragonling domain. If you pick evil, the Evil Creatures domain. Make your pick."

As always, we'd love to hear what you think of the story so far! Chapter 3 splits off into an evil version and a good version. tomorrow I'll post the good version. That'll be the last chapter for a while, as it's the last we have written.

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

Upon the request of F219, I'm going to stop sharing the story. (we don't want any spoilers, do we?) No chapter will be shared tomorrow, or at all (probably) after that.

We need your opinions on the story so far! Should we keep the story for the final game, or do you think the game would be more fun with a different story? We wouldn't mind writing a new one, really! Don't be afraid to offer constructive criticism, we want the final game to be something you'll enjoy! We'll read all of your ideas and implement as many as possible!

We can't continue planning dialogue, getting/making sound effects, or even making graphics until we get your input on our story! Let's hear it!

Re: [BuzzCraft] Discussion Thread

UPDATE:
From now on, should anyone give us feedback* on our ideas (eg. "Perfect, keep it as it is!" or "Great, but it would be better if you changed the pinecones into sandwiches."), your username will be put in the credits of BuzzCraft when it is released. If you make a suggestion* for the game (eg. "It would be great if you added a pet narwhal to the game!"), you will get guaranteed access to the closed alpha of the game.

Also, we're looking for one person to help with some art. If you are willing to get/already have LogMeIn Hamachi and Dropbox, you are creative, and want to apply, please leave a post here! Please create a project showcasing a picture your drew of a rat, a sword, and a person. You can draw them in what ever art style you want, and as many different styles you want. The more different types, the higher chance you will be chosen!

Application Template:
Date you joined Scratch: (approx.)
Link to best project:
Link to your application project:
Why you want to join:
Other notes:

Thanks, and keep Scratching!  smile

*We will be fairly lenient with judging whether or not your feedback/suggestion qualifies, but make sure your post is relative and thoughtful, not just something random you wrote to get alpha access or to be in the credits.

I like the logo. Although the sub-title is rather hard to read. Maybe have the flames come out of the text, not in the text itself.
