Generally you have to go to MIT, but cheddar (and possibly Paddle, I can't remember) didn't. Other than that you'd probably just need to have a lot of coding experience, basically.

Paddle's an MIT alumni, I'm an chemical engineering student from NYC.
Actually, both Paddle and I started off as moderators first before becoming part of the Scratch Team. Fairly good knowledge of Scratch is good, but willingness and dedication to help out the Scratch community is also very important among Scratch Team members.

Me too! (kinda). I would like to go to MIT because I would like to have a programming career, but I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about joining the Scratch Team if I could. I mean, with 1 million users all depending on the Scratch Team to make newer and newer versions I would get a little pressured.
