Well, uh, the show "H2O" is ruining any perception we might have gotten from Steve Irwin that you produce half decent media.

It's a really bad show about these 3 girls who, when come into contact with water, turn into mermaids. Yeah...

So I've just come back from hunting crocs and I've been wondering what you guys first think of when you think about Australia.
Recently at school I've been learning about Australian images and stuff.
So what would you consider to be the "average" Australian?
How do you think movies and other things have altered/created this image?
I'll have to go soon, I have to go surfing while the waves are still high.
I'm kidding about the crocs and surfing ok? I do bodyboard a bit though.
This belongs in RaP because its discussing how movies and stuff have created/altered the Australian image.Way to attract my attention!
@banana: OMG RLY?!
Well, considering the media, people seem think that the average Australian:
1. Eats Vegemite 24/7.
2. Is always saying 'Put another shrimp on the barbie!'
3. Plays the didgeridoo.
I'm not Australian (though I wish I were) but I know for a fact that not all Australians like/eat Vegemite, they don't really say 'Put another shrimp on the barbie!' all that much, and only Aboriginals typically play the didgeridoo.
It must be annoying to have all those stereotypes.
I'm an Australian. It is VERY annoying to the point that some comments in this forum are offensive!
@Andres-Vander
There IS a military! We were in both world wars, I think. We were definately in the second.
@GameGuy64
Have you seen X-Men? The guy that plays Wolverine (Hugh Jackman, fail spelling) is Australian! Hard to believe for americans and brittish! :0
Thought these two answered questions could be handy!

Here's what I see in movies:
G'dday, mate, I'm an Austraaaaaaaaaaaaaaalian, so I have an Austraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalian accent. Wanna hunt some dingos? I love eatin' crocs, they be mighty tasty. Wanna go wrestle some? While I'm gone, put another shrimp on the Barbie.
In books:
You can't tell if someone is from Australia unless it says so.
My view:
Just a normal person that lives in a country that's also a continent, which isn't weird at all.

I've been there with the school once. It's nice, lots and lots of koalas, although I think I told you this already on Skype

But how I truly see you, deep from the innards of my heart:
Your media censors everything
and you hold dangerous animals way too close to sensitive areas while explaining their poisonous abilities

Internet...
For the record, they're called venomous animals because they inject venom. Poisonous animals are those that are poisonous when eaten. I don't know what you mean by sensitive areas...
Not all Australian people are like Steve Irwin and handle dangerous animals everyday

Yes, I know.
I was joking for the whole of that post and meant it inoffensively.
EDIT: Meanwhile In Australia doesn't have a big enough database! I've seen hundreds similar and they've only shown about three in my attempts on the site!

I don't take offence.
I just get annoyed when people call snakes or similar animals 'poisonous' when they are 'venomous'.

Australia is boring. I know because I live there. If you want to see vast amounts of nothing and do nothing then it might not be boring. Also the government is basically communist but it likes you to think otherwise.
I completely agree! We are living under a non elected government. Julia Gillard is just a puppet for the labour party.
Dearie me. This seems to be getting political and I'm getting offended so I'm saying that so that I don't blow up and start arguing with you.
When I think of Australia, I think of a country! With sun! And Aboriginals!

That's enough for a return plane ticket surely?
And yes, let's leave out the political stuff. Keep it friendly.
