'stan' means land of. Uzbekistan is the land of the Uzbeks, Turkmenistan is the land of the Turks, Kazakstan is the land of the Kazakhs, and so on and so forth.

We should start calling England "Englishstan" then

Erm, no. We love metric. It's so much simpler and easier to use. I never use miles or inches or feet or anything.

Metric is much easier to use, and simpler, in calculations, though...

Erm, no. We hate it and were a bit stubborn to go fully metric!
Signs are in miles, horse racing in furlongs, mattresses in feet, the media measure screen sizes in inches, fuel efficiency in cars (miles per UK gallon), trampoline sizes,
Metric is used on rulers, drinks bottle (although a few places use imperial still with a pint), and thats really all I can think of.
While a few things use metric, we were too stubborn to go over fully!
Anyway, my area is sandwiched in by the cycling. If we can't go (you don't need a ticket unless you're at Box Hill, It'll be on TV anyway!

We do actually love metric. Fahrenheit? Yeah, no. Road signs are in metric and imperial; as is fuel. All newspapers use metric. All retail products made in the UK must be metric.
