Derpy is an insult for mentally impaired people, on par with *. I literally only call her Derpy because it's widely used. If not I'd be hopping on board with Ditzy Doo (makes more sense with Dinky anyways).

when I was little I read ALL the picture books of ponies. ALL of them. I think I might still have one (which I remember had a flower that reminded me of that flower in the episode about Cutie Pox except pinker and shallower).

Sure it started out fine and as a joke (the word) but it's gone too far now. It's an insult. It's like calling a pony '* Hooves'. That is why it's offensive. This isn't soccer moms-this is mothers of disabled people, calling in to complain that they've just named a pony a mental health slur.

Derpy is not a slur for mental retardation. It's commonly used to describe goofy faces or moments of stupidity, but please, making the word akin to joking about the mentally handicapped is stretching it. If anything, the claim that she must be mentally impaired because she has crossed eyes and that therefore the name Derpy is insulting is ridiculous because it draws on the stereotype that you're taking issue with to form your conclusion.

That said, I prefer the name Ditzy anyway. It sounds more like a real name.
