HElP

My pc was working fine yesterday, but today when I plugged it in it said 20%. It said "plugged in, not charging" and it wont charge. Then whenever I take out the lead it instantly goes off even though it has 20% charge left. I have a hp550 windows vista by the way. Please help.

Re: HElP

Hm.  This might be fairly trivial, but have you checked every link in the wire?  If so, I read somewhere that you might try shutting down your computer, removing the battery, (maybe dust it off a bit,) put it back in, and turn on your PC.  Also, I might suggest that you try a different outlet.  Also, it might be a good idea to turn off your PC and leave it like that for a while, and then check to see if it charged at all later.

"windows vista"

There's your problem.  tongue

Well, the advice above seems good. As for a new charger, try eBay, Amazon, or the manufacturer. If it still doesn't work, you may need to take it in to a computer repair place to have the mobo/power jack replaced. This happened to one of our family's laptops too.

How much would it cost. I'm probably getting a new laptop for my birthday which is soon, so I can just wait for that, but I'd still like to know, because I don't want to restart my pc every time I want to move to another room.

Re: HElP

Well, you could replace it yourself for pretty cheap. I assume it would have a slightly higher cost for you if you needed to buy a soldering iron, and you could ruin the computer, but it would be cheaper. As for a new power cord, a quick google search came up with a price of about 20 dollars.

Disclaimer: I have only linked to sites that were found by a quick google search. In  no way do I gaurante the reliability of the products or services above. I am not responsible for any damage caused to your laptop, or your wallet.  wink

Edit: if you are looking for a new laptop, the best thing to do would be to tell us what you want. From looking up the old one, it is a 15 inch screen, mid range power computer with integrated GPU? You could probably find one on the cheap these days.

Re: HElP

Reinstall your OS or do the equivalent of refreshing the memory on a PC. Could be something in the Kernel or something. That's usually the problem with macbooks and charging problems.

Everything has issues  tongue

They are very rare though and Apple tends to sort them out quickly, efficiently and give you a good deal  smile

Re: HElP

Make sure you get the wattage right... I accidentally broke my charger once and got a new one and it done the same thing... We took it to the computer shop and they couldn't figure out the problem... I spent a while looking at the back of the new charger and the old charger and realised that the new one was something like 90W and the old one was 65W.
