Change your name on scratch

I hink it would be cool to change your name on scratch. First of all, people may get tired of their name so they may want to change it, but not get a new account to do so. Also, say someonegot scratch like 5 yers ago and made their name something childish that now embarrasses them. They'd want to change it too.
    Here's a restriction though:
You can only change your name every 5 months. Otherwise people would keep changing it.
Also, when you would change your username, for a few weeks it would show under your name:
      "previously: (your name)"
That way people would know who you were. I'm not posting this because I am embarrassed about my name(I love my name) its just that I've heard some people say that they're enbarassed about their name. Hope this recommendation gets looked at by the Scrath team. I hope my restrictions made it more reasonable.

Re: Change your name on scratch

It would take ages though. Keep in mind the amount of times you've commented on, gave   a love it to, favourite, or tagged a project. And the amount of times you've posted in the forums. It would take too long to change everything.

Re: Change your name on scratch

If the system ran on user IDs, it might be possible, even if not so good. But can you imagine all the links to projects? scratch.mit.edu/projects/username/project_id

Re: Change your name on scratch

This has been shot down on Scratch Suggestions before. It's too complex.

@Scimonster: For friends and galleries it has an ID.

You know what? Disregard the first thing I said. This would work if they replaced the username in the URL with the ID.

That shouldn't make a difference. >.>

Well I am only going by what some other Scratcher said when this was suggested before  tongue

I'd have thought it would though. They'd have to change about 30000 items in the database for every user that changed their name.

Well they could just keep the original name on the url, just change forum posts and such.

It would still take up server space, time, and effort.

Yeah it would take forever  tongue  it could take weeks... months... maybe a year or two for every thing you've commented, loved, faved, tagged, uploaded, and posted on to be updated. Also, imagine people mentioning you, and newer Scratchers not knowing that you were once that user.

I do not support this idea, sorry  neutral

How does this tie in to the discussion about changing your name on Scratch?  Was that your old name on Scratch?  Perhaps you can give us some more details.

They could have it like twitter, you have an unchangeable username, but a changeable name.

Re: Change your name on scratch

I know that in FluxBB, you can change the username because everything is done with user IDs, not the username.
However, it appears that on this website, most stuff uses the username instead of the ID.

Also, if I change my name, would they leave redirects from my topics. On the forums, this would look weird:
