Yeah. Pikachu is surprisingly very powerful. Possibly the most powerful out of the whole ensemble.
By far, because everyone's recoveries are awful except for his and kirby's, who is the second best character.
To be precise... this is the tier list of SSB as current:
--------------------
1. Pikachu
2. Kirby
--------------------
3. Fox
4. C.Falcon
5. Mario
--------------------
6. Yoshi
7. Donkey Kong
8. Jigglypuff
9. Ness
--------------------
10. Link
11. Luigi
12. Samus
--------------------
So you are right. Pikachu realy has the best recovery, although I think Kirby's one is a little predictable.
And about your "only vs. mode is necessary", I don't think the game needs more game modes, it's just nice if there are good single-player modes.

Personally I think Yoshi is best (too bad he is poorly ranked on the tier list )

I know tier lists. I agree with all of them except maybe Zelda in Brawl and luigi in N64

I don't really care for single player. I just like battling with my brothers.

SSB tourney player of 3 years here, this is my view on some of these things...
Generally people rank the SSB games in the following order
1. SSB Melee
2. SSB 64
3. SSB Brawl
Melee is where smash became big, and when the official tourney organization at smashboards.com got organized. Most people like Melee best since it have a more balanced tier list than 64 and fewer touch of death combos and was more fast paced.
64, I think was the coolest since it was a bit easier than Melee and had super long combos that would kill you in 1 hit. The recovery you are talking about, all characters can cancel their recovery on landing. Pika was awesome in 64 since all his moves in the air lasted forever and the down-b move had no vertical limit so you could hit people really high in the air.
Brawl took everything people like about competitive smash bros and turned it in to something any 10 year old could master. They made it the slowest and floatiest game in the series, they took away lag-canceling, an advanced technique in 64 and Melee that made long combos possible, and they made a super lopsided tier list with an S-ranked character (MetaKnight). Brawl's tournament scene is bigger than 64's and Melee's since it was riding off their momentum and the Wii is the most popular console to date. But even top Brawl players agree that Brawl is probably the worst in the series and the community isn't that great anymore since some top players (M2K, ADHD) have been rigging most tourneys. I don't really play SSB more unless someone asks, I have been more into the Capcom fighters, they are so much fundamentally better.

@Archmage
. I'm actually not that good at SSB. I just know a lot. I personally think Brawl really is unbalanced. Everyone who practices a little bit with MK is better than someone else practicing with a lower-tier character. And also, we must not forget that Ganondorf had its own tier at the bottom a while ago .
By the way, is there any video on youtube of you playing in a tournament? I really want to see how good you are

Melee was my favorite, and i got mad when they did't put Mewtwo or Roy back into the game, yet somehow the completely useless Jigglypuff still returned. even Pihu was more preferable. if anyone wants to Brawl online, my friend code is 1891-8750-3394. lets team up!

I feel like Brawl is more for casual players, which is not necissarily a bad thing. I believe your opinion on melee being the best, I probably just like the original because that was the one I had through my childhood. I never had a gamecube and my parents only recently allowed me to play T games, so I never got good at melee. (I'm 14)

+1
Jiggly puff is totally useless, because one of her atacks is a SLEEP ATTACK! How stupid is that

Has anyone heard of the hack where you can play as Master Hand on Melee? I tried it but it didn't work. They are all great games, but I prefer Brawl, only because it has online multiplayer so I can test my skills on other players. Plus R.O.B is in there too!

Yea, but i don't have melee. Is it allowed in tourneys

My current hobby is Brawling my brother.
He played Ness yesterday, and I Ike. So, as many Smashers may know, PK Thunder off a ledge leaves Ness helpless, and I incorporated this into my game. He looped it around and hit himself, and he flew toward me. When he was just about to hit me, I sidestepped him, and he fell to his doom.
