Is decoding hashes illegal?

I was planning to try using PHP, but my webhost doesn't allow anything illegal. So... is it illegal, or just VERY difficult?
Oh yeah, and if I get it working, I might sell it to some spy agency for $10,000,000 or some other large figure like that.

Re: Is decoding hashes illegal?

No, it is not illegal unless you use it for retrieving passwords from sites and whatnot.

Since I'm not doing that, I guess it's OK. I just want to create a tool which can theoretically be used to do that, if you have access to the database.

Well yes. That is true. (And I do)
But this isn't really the topic.

Lets head right over to the main highway before we plummet off the side.

Lol the number one result is this topic  lol

Also, there is nothing digital that is impossible as long as you have enough time (possibly years) and enough computing power. Unless it is randomly assigned nonsense that doesn't follow its own rules, in which case it is practically impossible.

Re: Is decoding hashes illegal?

Not that I know of. But I don't think web-hosting sites allow brute-forcing.

So if you can figure out how to decode hashes without using too many resources. Then you should be fine.  smile

But what if we don't believe in any sort of supreme being?

Re: Is decoding hashes illegal?

Nope, as long as you're not decoding them to do something illegal.

This is a temporary signature. It will exist until I think of something witty.

How do you expect to make a hash decoder while other genius programmers haven't?

It would probably be extremely difficult, but you might be able to anyway...
I'm not sure if it is illegal.

If you make it, sell it to the government.

They often look for things like that.
