The plot is very pessimistic in the beginning yes
I made it that way because that's what people want--to be young forever and not have any worries etc.
*Spoilers: They agreed to it in the beginning/there was no "disaster"*
Video games and movies are still there. It's not entirely like, well, hypnotism, but they are just keeping them happy basically, so they don't see what's wrong with the whole thing
As for the dialogue, I'm very aware that is sucks. I'm terrible with dialogue. I'll try to improve upon that later
Not every game in existence is like that, I know, but the ones at the Arcade have been progressing more and more slowly into very violent ones, to keep the audience entertained, as original plots have been hard to come by with the need to make them quickly and the fact that they've been made for so many years

Personally, I think I would find "being young forever" most enjoyable at around late teens early twenties because (assuming I'm still in modern America) I would be able to drive, get married, and such.

Quite, but people in late teens/early twenties would be harder to control than a group of dispensable eleven-year-olds
In the beginning, everyone wanted it, but the "disaster" was planned and carried out as a kind of man-made apocalypse which no one was supposed to know about
Sure some people not chosen for the project lived in underground shelters for a time, but they can only survive there for so long
The "island" is the only place inhabited on Earth, and the Arcade has another purpose (possibly but I haven't decided yet--can't go into it)
...writing this out it seems really far-fetched :I
