I believe "backpack" has been picked already.

Boxes are better hiding places for stolen items than backpacks.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Project Page and Project Editor

I know Scratch is a way to learn, but the box sounds like  great way to steal scripts, and give credit or not, I want most of my important Scratch work to stay my work.  Seeing scripts, remixing and importing, and letting scripts be copied to another project should be able to eneble and disable so Scratchers have the privacy they need.

What you're talking about is a remix lock. This has already been rejected by the Scratch Team, as sharing (including scripts and sprites) is an integral part of Scratch.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Project Page and Project Editor

@Greenatic Ok, sounds good.
@technoboy Hmm, well Scratch will never be taken seriously if there is no way to protect projects.  With a protection, people could make engines and stuff to share the scripts, but if they hand drew a sprite with tons of costumes or spent years working on scripts that could simply be taken by someone else and have them get top loved from another's work (All happened to me) then Scratch is taking the edacational part a little too seriously.  Being able to just copy scripts or sprite is not educational at all.  Looking... I guess, for mine they need to understand some serious math so if someone could even remake I would be suprised.  But simply taking scripts or sprites, they never learn how to make them using whatever editing software for sprites and whatever methods used to make the original scripts.

For the graphics thing, will you be able to switch back to pixels easily? I like the look of pixels for some things. Also, will imported images be... converted into vector or something?

Currently it is sort of mixed - you can draw and import vector, but you can also import bitmaps.

We feel that a collection of projects that can be freely remixed leads to interesting re-use and evolution of ideas, and great opportunities for learning. If you don't wish to share your scripts, art, or ideas with others in the Scratch community, we will respect your choice. But if that is the case, please do not upload them to the Scratch website.

For more on the value of remixing, check out the link to the video on this project:

(And there's also some interesting discussion in the comments).

(And if you see people using your scripts with the intention of taking credit for your or other's work, please use the contact us link to let us know and we'll sort it out.)

Re: Scratch 2.0 Project Page and Project Editor

@Lightnin  I would love to share my projects on Scratch, but I'd rather share the engine then have someone start out using the entire project.  I've used Scratch for around five years and been on the website for nearly four, so there is no way I am going to quit, but with Scratch 2.0 allowing online then there is enough included to make projects competing with many serious programming hardwares.  Allowing everyone to use other people's work is the only reason why I should move on from Scratch.  Scratch has taught me how to program so having every project available for people to learn from is great.  However, many great projects have been copied and sprites or scripts stolen.  Many of my friends have quit Scratch because their work was stolen from them.  I have flagged some of these projects if they are trying to get all the credit, but not one has ever been deleted or even had responce.  As much as I like Scratch, I don't like the fact that you can either show your projects to everyone and help some learn, but risk having your work stolen, or keep them offline and not show anyone your work at all.  I have so many projects I would share to show progress, but it is not worth the risk of having someone else use before the full game is released.

Sadly, I don't think Scratch will change any of the script permission, so maybe importing a project can have something like remixed that tells who made the project that was imported.  Also, if a project is remixed, maybe a notification should appear in the messages Scratchers get.  Favorites, remixes, and even imports of a user's projects would be a great option to eneble or disable which ones send a message to that user.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Project Page and Project Editor

How about a formula that checks through a project's not-Scratch-included scripts, sprites, sounds, etc. and compares them to other projects?  If a project matched closely enough to another, then credit would be automatically given.   hmm

Re: Scratch 2.0 Project Page and Project Editor

@Greenatic The problem with that is many scripts, including scrolling, are usually similar, even though another person may have figured it out later.  In order to do some things, many equations need to be made, which would look similar to other scratchers using that equation.  If the person made it entirely themselves then they shouldn't have to give credit, even if they looked at another's scripts.  If it counted slight differences, some scripts that the person made by themselves could be mixed with another's scripts.  If only excact same scripts were counted, anyone not wanting to give credit could easily add or delete something to the script to make it different.  Importing a project or sprite is possible to give credit to the project it was originally made in, but if there are several sprites that were imported from different users it would be a problem to give credit to everyone.

I meant comparing all the scripts as a whole in one project to all of those in another, not checking credit for each individual one.  (Besides, my suggestion would be most useful for visuals and audio--perhaps scripts wouldn't be included.)

Yes. You might have to uninstall the Flash plugin for FF, though.

Does the "project credits" section show credits for backpack items?

Not automatically. However, that part was updates so the notes and credits are on the same tab.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Project Page and Project Editor

One concern that you might want to bring up: What if I have a leaderboard with cloud variables and somebody hacks the game? They could troll, spam, or cheat the highscores. I would like it if it was set up so that edited projects do not affect the original's cloud variables.

They thought of that. The cloud variables are by project, but by that specific project. If someone else is modifying the code, it becomes a different project, and gets its own cloud variable space.
