No Religion Related Avatars

I noticed how many people on Scratch have an avatar talking about god and how you should believe in him. I'm Christian, but I don't really go to church or anything, and I don't disrespect him. But I believe that there are MANY other Scratchers who are not Christian, and find that avatar offensive.

I think that religion related avatars should be banned, mainly because bringing up religion (or politics) can cause a huge argument, and sometimes an end to a friendship.

What are your thoughts?

Re: No Religion Related Avatars

If it's saying something like "the god I believe in is superior to your god" then yeah, it needs to be removed. I don't see anything wrong if it's just something like "I believe in this god and I'm proud" then I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be allowed.

Re: No Religion Related Avatars

The one I'm seeing EVERYWHERE on Scratch says, "He died for you. Why not live for him?" I think that could be a problem for non Christians, just saying.

well, here's something to think about: couldn't you just ignore the avatar? The one that I think your talking about isn't too flashy. It could easily be ignored.

Anything that's animated is somewhat flashy. Yeah, I don't like that one.

I agree. It catches your eye to easily, and it's VERY suggestive.

I really don't see anyting wrong with talking about religion. We express our feelings and belief. Besides, couldn't anybody who disagrees just argue on the comments are something? (That's what I do.)

If you say you don't really go to church or anything, you, my friend, are not a Christian. Think about it.

And about religions: don't compare them to politics, and don't complain how religion based avatars could end a friendship.

Re: No Religion Related Avatars

So, we can't share our beliefes, whatever they are, at all, because it has the potential to make someone angry?

That doesn't make sense to me. I'm not saying that I am/not religious, but I am pointing out that the Internet is a free place, a tool where you can share your thoughts. Banning users for having a religious icon, seems like censoring the web, what the US was trying to stop when SOPA was around.  hmm

Yeah, if it gets to the point where someone is insulting someone or something related to religion, you should contact the Scratch Team.

But discussion of religion is generally disallowed on Scratch, because there are so many differing beliefs and they don't want anyone to get hurt. They have blanket bans on some topics for this reason.

Discussion, yes. But simply an image of what you believe in? Does that mean I can't post a picture of Steve Jobs?  tongue

No, but that's completely different unless you believe he's some sort of almighty being (although I wouldn't be surprised if you did).

Depends on what you call an "Almighty being", but I do think he was superior to many others in a sense of innovation.

Causes that you believe in and people you look up to are different from religion.

A religion could have someone you look up to within it.

Like, Steve Jobsism could be a belief that Steve Jobs created all humans and has special powers.

According to Wikipedia: "Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that establishes symbols that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values."

Well yeah, but I,m pretty sure you know what kind of religion talks are not allowed on scratch.

I discussed this with the Scratch Team once and I was basically told that talking about religion was fine, as long as there was no hating.

Seems like a good policy to me.  big_smile

As long as the religion does not offend and is not inappropriate, it is probably fine.

Goodbye, Scratch. I am leaving because of the exams coming up at our school, though I'll check the forums once or twice a week.

If you say you don't really go to church or anything, you, my friend, are not a Christian. Think about it.

Just because you don't go to church doesn't make you not Christian. If you believe in the word of the Christian Bible, then you are Christian.
