We've changed the way post counts are shown on the forums.
If you have less than 100 posts, your actual post count will be shown.
If you have >1000 posts, your post count will be "1000+"
If you have >500 posts, your post count will be "500+"
If you have >100 posts, your post count will be "100+"
We did this to discourage the practice of spamming topics just to up one's post count. We considered hiding post count entirely, but decided it's nice to be able to get a general sense of how much someone has posted on the forums - so we went with the tiered approach.
Scratch On!

>Profile, look at post count, spam.
This is a terrible idea by the way, in my opinion.
Plus this new update rules out nobody, I've never seen spam to up a post count.

I'm not sure what the use would be? Seems like it might encourage them to spam to up the count, which is why we've removed the actual numbers.

I was the first to notice it. :3 At least the first to post about it.
I suppose it's good but I kind of liked the competitiveness of the old system.

thing is this is how users became famous, although if we have new ranks like experienced scratcher this may be all right...
EDIT: maybe you could show users number of posts in non-misc forums

If ranks were somewhat tied into post count then it'd be acceptable, this just makes little sense and doesn't really stop spam.

I don't think this is a very good idea. Maybe if there was a way to veiw how many posts you actually have in the profile page.
Edit: Oh there already is that. I completely support the idea.

Hmm, I think we should have ranks to go with the post counts, just to be a bit more obvious.
Basically it could go like this:
<100: New Scratcher
>100: Scratcher
>500: Confident Scratcher
>1000: Trusted Scratcher
Then again, I guess post counts don't really define that.

I think we could also show the exact count above 15,000 since spammers aren't as likely to reach that high. But, we'd need an exact post count anyway since you can't see if a person has spammed up to 14,999 without knowing where they spammed.
I'm not against the change, I'm actually kind of with the change. But spammers may aswell take advantage of this too. However, the pros, right now, overweigh the cons.

Hmmm... Well, this raises an important question - is this a good criteria for becoming famous? It seems like making awesome projects would be a better one.

I never saw post counts as ranks anyways, so why start now?
I don't see those spamming topics any more anyways.

No, it should stop spam a fair bit, if it's post count spam. People won't be able to get to 100+ posts just with spam, they'd get caught first. So they wouldn't bother. And the other targets are also hard to reach. And once they got over 1000 there'd be no point in spam-posting at all.

Where are you seeing all this spam? And they'll be caught no matter how their post count is displayed.

well, some people like me are very active at helping scratchers on the forums but don't often post projects..

Glad you like it! One thing to note is that the forums will still show the exact post count for anyone with less than 100 posts. Hopefully we can catch commercial spammers before they get past that level. But maybe you meant Scratchers who spam to up their count?

I don't see spam, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't tighten defence against it. And the point of this was to make less point in Spamming to get high post counts. I think it should do that.

They'll get caught before they reach 100 anyway, and under 100 their post count is shown as numbers anyway, pretty pointless update.

And that's a great thing! But I'm not sure if the post count really reflects being active and helpful very well... Unfortunately, things like that are really hard to quantify, and represent. It'd be cool if we could show a *helpfulness* number, but I know of no good way to do that.

Good idea, but I don't think we really need this, only because now we don't have a "Misc" forum anymore, so there's no place to put these topics. If they DO get posted, why not just close them?
Anyway, I'm not going to argue with this. I saw my post count as >1000, so I headed over to Announcements.

Uhh, they're not always going to have 0 posts when they start spamming. Somone might have say 980 posts, and wants 1k by the end of the day so will spam to 1000.
