Forums
I think there should be part of the forums dedicated to random subjects like sports, math, science, camping etc.
The only thing worse than watching jaws on the way to the beach is watching chuck norris on your way to texas

There is already a section for that. It's the Things I'm Reading and Playing forum. 
That forum section is for things that generally inspire you, such as art, literature, TV shows, sports activities, etc. So the topics you mentioned can also go in there. 
Just be reasonable when forming the thread topic - make sure your topics are well-formed and fit the given forum structure. For example, a topic asking others about astronomy is acceptable since you're talking about a subject that is likely to inspire others, a topic asking for help on a science homework problem is not.
