Gameplay-elements for a platforming game?

I like to make platforming games, and the traditional ones I'm currently on, are actually pretty boring.

Any ideas for gameplay elements to make things more interesting?

Like having a jet-pack, only not as cliché and overused.

Things that the person you are controlling could have:
Wings
Lasers
Rocket Shoes
Fireballs
etc.

Wings could be interesting, but the others have been overused.
