I don't get why you wouldn't pick like Torchic or something
When later you can catch a Shroomish or a Lotad,
Which are perfectly good grass types...
Plus Lotad is Water/Grass, so if you pick Torchic then that basically covers the three base types, but Lotad won't learn a water move for a long time, so then get a Tentacool.

Anyways I'm still in my amazing Red escapade and my team is:

Venusaur lvl 39
Fearow lvl 35
Clefable lvl 43
Flareon lvl 40
Dugtrio lvl 36

I've just beaten the 7th gym (Blaine) and am on the way to Giovanni. I've also caught Zapdos but I'm not going to use him on my team.
