There's 4 in a nutshell

70% of fanfiction is horribly written and just filled with and-then-they-kissed moments.
It's really hard to find a decent one with a well-developed plot and a mixture of everything that makes a piece of writing good, but if you work at it, there are good ones out there.

You just have to wade through the ocean of bad fanfiction. Most people don't survive. The rare ones that do find the reward, which is like one well-written one. But it's worth it.

"And-then-they-kissed moments"...ahahah downright tame compared to most fanfics)
^True, most are NSFW or involve explicit content. Though, I trust you haven't experienced those that much because why would you even be reading those now, hm?
(Mostly the explicit content is written by the well-educated thirteen-year-olds. Anyways. I swear it was just out of morbid curiosity, I swear ;_
Well, this comment shouldn't turn into an elementary note-passing session so I am going to submit this soon. The point Wicki and I are trying to make is that although a lot of fanfiction is utter cr-badly written, there is one out there that is simply amazing.

There are a few out there that are 'simply amazing'. Plus, I've never encountered one of those and-then-they-kissed moments. It honestly comes down to the fandom that you are writing about, and the writer. And if this is what you're saying, there's nothing wrong with a romance story.
